I was not that thrilled with the man from nowhere or whatever the last one was, which was a huge dissappointment to me cause I normally am quite enthralled with Tom's work. Claude Dallas would be a GREAT richard song. Aye-yi-yi... (Anything but Gallo del cielo... owing all 413 tom russell versions of the song, plus a token joe ely version, is enough for me!) Tom's road to bayamon was one of two records (literally, vinyl records) I bought at lunch time my first day at work here in state college, visiting the used record store, 13 years ago. (David Olney's deeper well was another one, and I also highly recommend that disc and eye of the storm... he's gotten too bluesy and aggressive, for want of a better word, for me in general the last few years though.) I also particularly like the live version of Manzanar... the harmony there is simply angelic. My signing up for this list is starting to pay dividends. I heard Richard play "Sonora's Death Row" with Cry Cry Cry in Boulder and then in D.C. this past February and have been wanting to find a recording of it ever since. Tom Russell, huh? Thanks a bunch. Does anyone know a good recording of the song Richard plays about the Creole Girl on "The Banks of the", is it "Pon-le-tray"? Those are my two favorite songs that he covers. Have a good day, Bill PS - Living out West, I'm rather jealous of you in the East considering Richard's tour schedule for this whole year and into the decided future. You're very lucky. Enjoy! _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 04 Sep 2001 13:11:08 EDT From: Rongrittz@aol.com Subject: [RS] Sonora/Pontchartain. >> I heard Richard play "Sonora's Death Row" with Cry Cry Cry in Boulder and then in D.C. this past February and have been wanting to find a recording of it ever since. The song, officially called "The Lakes of Pontchartrain," is an old traditional tune, which I know has been covered by Irish folksinger Paul Brady. I have an explanation about some of its various origins on the "Covers & Others" section on my Richard Shindell chords page. An interesting version of this is sung in French by Gilles Servat (the RS of Brittany :)) on his latest CD. "Au bord du lac ponchartrain." (Naturally I have sent Richard a copy.) One of the contenders for my favorite song of 2001 is John Gorka's "Oh Abraham". It's about him picking up a penny and reflecting on the changes that have happened in America ("more software in the hardware store"). My favorite verse is: "I was born by a Kerouac stream Under Eisenhower skies They saw freedom as big idea Now it was right before my eyes They say Jack helped to build the Pentagon And Ike built the Interstate that we are off and on" ------------------------------ End of shindell-list-digest V3 #289 ***********************************
