Okay, okay. I have it on very good authority that Richard Shindell and CBS' 60 Minutes Reporter Steve Kroft were actually separated at birth. The Mandy Patankin thing is a figment of someone's sick imagination. I mean, Richard isn't even Jewish fer crissakes. At least I don't tink he is. Charlie...sorry I didn't get to chat you up at all during FRFF as well. I liked the things you had to say on Friday at the "So You Wanna Be A Folk Singer" (or something like that) symposium at the Family Stage. One of these days I'm gonna make it to the Under The Radar shows, especially if my daughter goes to school in New England next year. Richard was definitely missed at FRFF this year, but in hindsight I'm thinking it might have been a good idea on his part to skip a year. Dar definitely needs to take a break from the Festival given her hugely disappointing performance on the mainstage Saturday night. Or am I the only one who thought so? No doubt it was a cold night and tuning was a problem, as was the sound men who seemed to be completely out of it. Even Dave & Tracy gave a so-so performance, with most songs sounding hurried and off-key. Conversely, all the performances on the workshop stage were brilliant and a joy to behold (even if Dave did fluff the lyrics to Preston Miller at one point). Tracy's mandolin licks during Dave Nields'(nee Jones)solo song was tres cool and she deserved the huge applause she got afterward. I kept thinking of last year, when Richard did "Fleur de Lis" on the workshop stage--the best version I've ever heard bar none. Hearing John Gorka do "Love Is Our Cross To Bear" with Lucy on harmony was a high point of the weekend for me, just as Richard's "Fleur de Lis" last year. I came away from this FRFF with a new realization. Most folk music, especially the quieter singer/songwriters, just doesn't go over well when there's a rock concert-sized crowd and the sound system distorts so much. Even the Nields' performance was flawed most of the night on the mainstage-- a group that lends itself well to crowds and overly loud sound systems. Oh well. I'll still probably be at FRFF come 2002. Sorry I missed you too Vanessa--I did see you at D&T's workshop stage performance, but never did hear you call my name. But I did see you mouthing the words to all the songs. I far prefer the acoustic version to the full band, although it was quite entertaining to watch the drummer earning his money on that song. (I do think it's a crime to break up the trucking trilogy. But forced to choose, I would give up kenworth in favor of SWCD. ) jim ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 31 Jul 2001 16:09:49 -0700 From: jim colbert Subject: [RS] sonora's death row > >> I'd edit out the cover songs. Gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous song though, but offering little to the already fine studio version. and I agree, it is too bad may wasn't performed or recorded. I've never been a huge fan of the song lyrically but musically I recall this as simply aching when he did it live.
