Wills" Subject: [RS] Live Album Title Dear Listers, Album title is not yet chosen (final decision will be Mr. Shindell's, of course), but I do want to point out that John Hiatt's "contractural obligation" live album had him dressed in a kimono and was entitled HIATT COMES ALIVE AT BUDDOKAN! and sold, I think, about 25 copies. Also, it looks like we'll have to cut a couple of songs from the disc, as it is currently too long to fit on one cd. Unfortunately, double cds (today) sell worse than single cds, as retailers will not stock as many, due to the higher list price. Will keep you all appraised of the situation. Ron - saw you at FRFF... sorry I didn't get a chance to say hi! For one thing, there's already a bunch of songs from "Sparrows Point." Plus, the version of "Willin'" that RS did at the taped shows was nice, but nothing special . . . pretty much a direct lift of the original, not to mention Ronstadt's cover. The other two non-RS songs, "Sonora" and "Sandy," should "cover" us just fine. Hey, folks, Perhaps it's my FRFF-deprived mind -- well, deprived might be the wrong word, since I've *never* been to FRFF -- but I was watching Phillies-Mets on Saturday and thought to myself: Richard and Mets lefthander Al Leiter, separated at birth? Just wondering. Deb ===== You can take the rock band away from the girl and think you've tamed her. Richard/Mandy gave up that dead-end Chicago Hope TV gig for a far more lucrative career in folk music. NOOOOOOOO. Ahem! Now that I've got that out of my system, let me elaborate. "Willin" did leave me a little underwhelmed. It was fun to hear, fun to see Richard do, and overall very nice, but it wouldn't make me feel cold and empty inside if left off the live album. I wouldn't roam dry, barren deserts weeping and aiming futilely to forget that which were missing. Not like, say, if "Memory of You" were cut. The live version Richard's been doing is so distinct from the version on Sparrow's Point. As Richard said, that song is "creepy," and that never really came across to me as clearly as it did when done live. It's a little more plaintive, a little more urgent, it hurts a little more. Never mind that it's just a plain beautiful song and very quintessentially Richard Shindell in my opinion with its ghosts and its mystery and its enigmatic word play. And that's not even to say that it was a year after I started asking Richard to do Memory of You live when I finally got my wish. I would be so sad if it weren't on the live disc. :-( Not my decision, though I suppose. I'll just sit here crossing my fingers and hoping for the best. Peace, Love, and Mischief, Vanessa P.S. I had so much fun chilling with all you listers who were at the song circle on Saturday night at Camp Dar! For those of you who didn't make it, let me say that the spirit of Richard was alive and well at the Camp Dar song circle. ;-) ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 30 Jul 2001 15:55:57 -0400 From: Jeff Gilson Subject: Re: [RS] Live Album Title Vanessa wrote: >P.S. I know I'll get lynched if I suggest "Nora" (which has never done much for me), so it's looking like either "Kenworth" or "Summer Wind, Cotton Dress" might be the next likely victim. If that's so, then it's not really a reflection of where he's at these days, so maybe logically speaking, that would be a good one to leave off the live album. - --V "If your mirror has a monster in it, do not shout, This kind of situation does not call for freaking out, And do nothing that you would not want to see him do, Cause that monster in the mirror, he just might be you." --Grover Monster, "The Monster in The Mirror" On Mon, 30 Jul 2001 Rongrittz@aol.com wrote: > >> I wouldn't roam dry, barren deserts weeping and aiming futilely to forget that which were missing. Richard's college bandmate "Old" John Gorka was in great form. While there, I bought the LIVE AT THE POSTCRYPT CD. "Fishing" is on it. This CD was recorded about a year before BLUE DIVIDE and Richard explains the song in his intro. There are also pictures. Dar looks so different but Richard looks exactly the same.
