I'm directing a really cool play about a movie star and a novelist working through grief in NYC August 9-19. And my latest full-length play, a comic drama about a Prohibition era black blues singer who decides to convert to Judaism, is having staged readings in NYC August 12-13. Please backchannel me for more info, OR you can go to www.dancingwiththebadman.homestead.com And now back to your regularly scheduled Falcon Ridge buildup! See you in Hillsdale! Last night I got an email from someone I don't know, just this random thing about math symbols on the computer and whatnot, with an attachment. I DON'T KNOW WHAT POSSESSED ME to open the attachment, but (okay, everyone cringe now) I did. It was so clearly a virus (unknown email from unknown person, with .exe attachment), and I am completely compulsive about never ever ever EVER opening unknown attachments . . . I have no idea what came over me. But without even thinking, I did it. Then I quickly deleted it, as if that would help solve everything. So now I've unleashed something probably disastrous on my computer that I don't even know what it is, and I don't have the attachment that it came from anymore. This was last night, and so far nothing has crashed or anything, but I think I'd almost feel better if it had, because then at least I'd know what the purpose of it was. So I was just wondering if any of you know anything about a virus that's sent around via an email about mathematical symbols, or if there's a website or something I can go to where it might be listed. Any advice would be hugely appreciated. Thankee kindly! Ciao! Katie ________________________________________________________________ GET INTERNET ACCESS FROM JUNO! The only thing you did wrong was to open the attachment. Deleting it quickly was probably a good thing. It's really difficult to spread a virus through e-mail alone. I'm sure Tom and others will correct me if I'm wrong or incomplete. A couple pointers (1) Don't open attachments that you don't know about. (2) In general, mimimize the distribution of attachments, especially when sending to lists. Don't send attachments to lists unless absolutely necessary and then point out that you've sent an attachment.
