Woo hoo! My only thoughts: sure would be cool if it was a double live ( I know, I know.) or maybe even a single live cd -But, with a promo ep with some bonus stuff also available for purchase ala blue divide or spring? That would keep the disc to a single for marketing ease but allow the listers and completists a few more goodies, hint hint hint. I would pass on 4th of July Asbury Park in favor of the live encore of Love Hurts with lucy from Montclair. I mean, I ain't sayin' the Bryants were cooler than Bruce, I'm just saying, between the two, I liked LH better. Plus, it's a shorter song and would free up those valuable disc minutes for more songs! I know it's sort of expected, but I personally could live without AYHN (nothing against the song, just over the years it's become way less a favorite for me than the darker (for want of a better term) tracks. I started to list the tracks that were essentials to me, basing this partially on having been at 2 of the 3 shows. But that was turning into Charlie's list, so I'm limiting myself to five must haves: Courier, Reunion Hill (in it's stark, slower glory), the unrecorded Willin' cover/Next Best Western (course, how can you do the trilogy without KOMD?), and Summer Wind. One other thing to consider is not just what songs we love but are the live versions notably different from the studio versions? Wisteria comes to mind to me; it is absolutely a drop dead gorgeous song but I recall it as being pretty similar to the studio version. jim in state college pa ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 18 Jul 2001 09:42:41 EDT From: Rongrittz@aol.com Subject: Re: [RS] a few thoughts on the tracks >> I would pass on 4th of July Asbury Park in favor of the live encore of Love Hurts with lucy from Montclair. << No. No. Uh-uh. No. I'm sorry. No. "4th of July, Asbury Park" was one of the single most spontaneously magical moments that I've ever experienced in all my years of attending concerts . . . for God's sake, THEY'D NEVER PLAYED THE SONG BEFORE, and they NAILED it. "Love Hurts," while it's a beautiful song done beautifully, it was, IMHO, a pretty standard Richard/Lucy duet. Wisteria, Nora, You Stay Here, Fleur de Lis and Fishing are among my favorites. Would have loved to have seen You Again and By Now on the list but overall, I think this is a great track list. I actually found it funny that neither my favorite (You Again) or my least favorite (By Now) made the cut. Kind of like in statistics where you drop the outliers. I am very happy to see that Fleur-de-lis made the cut. I have to say that while Richard and Lucy sound great, Sandy is not a song I like much. I don't find it at all romantic. Maybe you have to be from New Jersey ;-)! I think "Richard Shindell Live" would work great for this album. I just don't see Richard having any kind of cutesy/punny title. I guess time will tell. I don't know if my original message was sort of unclear (as most of my emails are wont to be), or if RonG needs to brush up on his Basic Sarcasm, but assuming the latter isn't an option (and I'm assuming it isn't :-)), I just wanted to clarify my last post for my own self-respect and peace of mind: That line is my new favorite because it's HILARIOUS. (A folk singer? Sharing his thoughts and feelings through song? Now THAT'S something you don't see every day - way to go, Dana :-)) I didn't want to say anything in case the guy who wrote it is on this list (if he is, no offense is intended . . . we all run out of original lines sometimes!), but I just wanted to make sure my message was clear. Now that I've beaten this unfunny-to-begin-with joke to death, I'll let it drop. But come on, don't you think it would be great if all folk reviews began with that line? It pretty much sums up what the rest of the world thinks of all folksingers anyhow :-) Ciao! I was going to go up to see Richard in Burlington when he was doing the Contois Auditorium in Sept - -- that got cancelled - so I was going to switch to this boat cruise thingy, but my sister who lives in Burlington (& who was going to put me up & who I was going to drag along with me) is out of town..... to make matters worse, the Acoustic Cafe in Bridgeport is only about 20 minutes from my house, but I am going away on vacation next week and will miss that one too. Three opportunities missed -- hopefully this big concert swing in Winter 02 we keep hearing about will bring him through CT.
