You probably know all about most of these, but the Martin Simpson disc is the one you may not be aware of, I'm not sure if there's a US release, but it's certainly worth tracking down. Carter/Grammer - Drum Hat Buddha Eliza Gilkyson - Hard Times in Babylon John Gorka - The Company You Keep Martin Simpson - The Bramble Briar Oh Susanna - Sleepy Little Sailor Heather Eatman - Real, Bill Morrissey - Something I Saw, and Mark Erelli - C&C, would have been included in any 'normal' 6 month period. Lucy's new album would also have made the list, but as it's not released until September, it doesn't quite fit the criteria. I think it's easily her best album by a wide margin; it has a different feel to the previous three with lots more subtlety and a more 'relaxed' atmosphere. The track with RS (The Angels Rejoiced Last Night), is a lovely song, the perfect way to finish the album. best wishes Neil - ------------------------------------------------- Fish Records Suppliers of singer/songwriter, folk & acoustic music Shrewsbury, England neil@fishrecords.co.uk http://www.fishrecords.co.uk tel +44 (0) 1743 231546 fax +44 (0) 1743 354354 - ------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 08 Jul 2001 10:34:27 -0400 From: "Michaela O'Brien" Subject: [RS] Updated Tour Schedule Hi all, Below is Richard's updated tour schedule, including opener/co-bill info. One album that I find particularly yummy is Nick Cave's "no more shall we part." At first listen, I was a bit skeptical--this is, after all, a much, much mellower Nick Cave, and mellow in a different way than he was on "The Boatman's Call," his last album of "love songs." Where was the roaring, explosive Cave that I was so used to? It's given way to more of a seething, simmering disc of anxieties and insecurities and quiet angers. Nice. Well, I raved about the new Jim White on this list before, but the album is so good that I can't see the harm in reiterating its amazing-ness. The album is all over the place, but in a good way. From alt-country to straight-up bluegrass to a few less easily pinned-down tunes, it's all fun, fun stuff. It's called "No Such Place," and it's on David Byrne's Luaka Bop label. Clever lyrics, fun melodies, awesome production, and a really singular, wacky perspective from Jim White. I like. This CD is gorgeous! I put a review of it up on my Duncan Sheik site--the link is here: http://duncansheik.faithweb.com/PM-review.html I love Duncan Sheik's voice--there's something very otherworldly and ghostly about his low, vibrato-less croon. And it really works on "Phantom Moon." I dunno--just go buy it. :-) Peace, V ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 8 Jul 2001 17:58:23 EDT From: Sdgold60@aol.com Subject: [RS] the next half of the year.. more than what has come to my attention in the first 1/2 of the year ( i add the soundtrack to OH brother to my list of favorites and TIME*SEX*LOVE- marychapincarpenter) the summer season will bring .. eddie from ohio with Quick..- i have heard 8-9 songs and its a great cd gillian welch's cd dar live the new... every single day.. from lucy kaplansky there is an eberhardt cd in the works and richard live the nields live for those nields fans out there.. kris delmhorst has a new one on the way i have a copy of hte new nanci griffith.. the woman redeems herself and dove into demons.. if you are roots americana fan.. patty loveless and husband wrote a western kentucky style cd with original and trad works that is breathtaking and then the redhouse release of women singing greg brown in tribute sharon ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 08 Jul 2001 18:18:13 -0500 From: Bill Eley Subject: Re: [RS] Top 5 of the first half of 2001 I want to be sure and get out 3 that immediately come to mind for me: Don Conoscenti - Paradox of Grace Don's best work yet - amazing songs and amazing imstrumentation. He produced, and plays most of the instruments, with wonderful backing vocals from Ellis Paul on most tracks. You owe it to yourself to check Don out if you haven't already. David Francey - Torn Screen Door I heard this Canadian singer/songwriter on a Maine folk show on the net, and he was superb. He tours mostly in Canada, and the NE U.S., and I was blown away by his studio performance that day. The CD he was promoting (which I ordered from him) didn't disappoint. It was even his first ever order from Texas :-) Eric Taylor - Skuffletown This is only Eric's third CD, which is incredible for a Texas legend who has been a somewhat famous singer/songwriter in these parts for 30 years. As a contemporary of Guy Clark and Townes Van Zandt, Eric's songs are equally dark and complex. It was Richard solo, doing "Fishing," "Mary Magdalene," "The Things That I Have Seen," and "Arrowhead" (and maybe one more). I didn't hear Gene say where or when it was recorded, but obviously during his "Blue Divide" period. I didn't tape it because we are reduced to a small boom box, while our "official" stereo, which was taken in to be repaired, is somewhere in American Appliance limbo. But it was nice to hear. As for the NJ question, does anyone know anything about that Clearwater festival that is listed for Asbury Park? It's a Sunday and I'm off from work!
