First, regarding Gorka, "Temporary Road" was the last album that I took very seriously, even though I've bought them all and there have been flickers of greatness on each. It just seems as if he's throwing rhymes up until something sticks. I still go see him when he comes around, because he's a great performer and I sure wish I had his voice. And it was only through listening to Gorka that I stumbled upon Shindell way back when, so I owe him an allegiance. I think E sums up The Weather in her usual succinct way. It's a real nice song, a bit of a toe tapper, and fun to sing along at the top of your lungs with people looking on nervously while they pass you on the freeway. But Gorka could have written it, for cryin' out loud. And whenever it comes on in the car, I can practically hear my teenagers in the back seat cringing at the "moms and dads" line. As to "Fortress" - why wasn't that on Sting's greatest hits collection? It's a breath-taking song. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 19 Jun 2001 20:13:18 -0400 From: "Norman A. Anyway it was a very important song for me when I was clinically depressed and getting divorced and there was a wall between me and everyone else, especially anyone who was happy. Going to have to go listen to Dar's After All now. Becky PS. I hated Dodge Ball too, Candy. ________________________________________________________________ GET INTERNET ACCESS FROM JUNO! I don't know about anybody else, but this portion of the song has always sounded a bit sarcastic to me. Maybe it's the line, "maybe even love each other", with an emphasis on "even". I could be reading WAY to much into this, but I always thought of this as kinda railing against the "comforts" of a marriage that has lost its way....."times too short to sit & whine".... Which is an interesting thought when set up against the nice bouncy tone of the song. But that's just the feeling of one person who has an admittedly dark view of things (most of the time). whatever.. virginia (who is much better at expressing herself verbally than in writing, which makes posting pretty intimidating with this group). I like the slight darkness of "heaven knows you love your kids / might even love each other" because it is "might" and not "do" -- like Easy Street. But to be sure, not the BEST of ricahrd. As for "Gorka could have written it" -- well hell, the best Gorka is tremendous stuff and I think they could cover each other. Wordsmiths. I prefer the old dark Gorka, though! But if Richard covered "Love is our cross to bear" -- well I'm not sure I could survive, actually, I'd need a private box and about 1000 boxes of kleenex. lisa ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 19 Jun 2001 22:13:56 -0400 From: "Lea Gavrieli" Subject: [RS] Isolation Songs As we're looking at 'Isolation Songs', let's not forget the anthem of my teenage experience, Paul Simon's 'I Am A Rock', (...and a rock feels no pain/ and an island never cries) Lea ps, I agree with Ron 1000% re: Drum Hat Buddah, a quantum leap for Carter and Grammer, who were really pretty terrific before. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 19 Jun 2001 22:19:56 -0400 From: "Norman A. Reading the words on the page, it sounds angrier than what I rememeber from Phil's singing. Maybe one for an angry Lucy. Norman Separate Lives by Phil Collins You called me from the room in your hotel All full of romance for someone that you met And telling me how sorry you were, leaving so soon And that you miss me sometimes when you're alone in your room Do I feel lonely too? You have no right to ask me how I feel You have no right to speak to me so kind We can't go on just holding on to time Now that we're living separate lives Well I held on to let you go And if you lost your love for me, well you never let it show There was no way to compromise So now we're living (living) Separate lives Ooh, it's so typical, love leads to isolation So you build that wall (build that wall) Yes, you build that wall (build that wall) And you make it stronger Well you have no right to ask me how I feel You have no right to speak to me so kind Some day I might (I might) find myself looking in your eyes But for now, we'll go on living separate lives Yes for now, we'll go on living separate lives Separate lives ------------------------------ End of shindell-list-digest V3 #202 ***********************************
