Then again, she's not much of a fan of Richard's voice at all. And all you cruel, spineless, cold hearted fiends out there who don't like "Grocer's Broom" I say PHFFFFFFFFFFTTTTT!!!!!!!!!! You mean I was shedding tears for nought? And yes, Janet, I remember "Skullsy" very well, used to play it just about every day on the streets of Brooklyn as a lad. I think I could even draw the game board if I had to, provided I had a big piece of white chalk. Hee. Hee. Cliff Eberhardt plays at my house this Sunday afternoon. Gonna try and get him to do "You're A Big Girl Now," the other Dylan tune he recorded but didn't get on to the "Nod To Bob" tribute CD from Red House, which is pretty damned terrific save for one or two scratch yer head tunes. Can't wait. RonD ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 08 Jun 2001 07:54:56 -0400 From: jcolb Subject: [RS] merritt parkway > So, am I the only one who actually likes Merritt Parkway? Richard is a guitar hero to me, but I want to hear that in the context of a song. I would have axed it in favor of shades of black, shades of blue (although that isn't his either...) jim's two cents ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 8 Jun 2001 08:06:52 EDT From: RockinRonD@aol.com Subject: [RS] Pick, Play & Pretend Fest It's official: The "Miles and Miles/Somewhere Near Port Jefferson" Pick, Play & Pretend Fest is on for the afternoon of July 14th at Chez DiGennaro in eastern Long Island. The picking, playing and pretending--open to members of both the Dave & Tracy and Richard Shindell List members (is there a Lynn Miles List?)--will begin on the Red Cedar Soundstage (my outside deck) at about 3PM, with munchies and various liquids for imbibing throughout the afternoon and into the early evening. At 7:30PM, James O'Malley, a terrific singer/songwriter and once leader of a 70's folk group called "The Braid," will open for Lynn Miles, who will take to the stage at about 8PM. All this for the meager price of $15. All those interested in coming, either to play or witness the undertaking as outlined above, please RSVP ASAP or PDQ. This will be a Hoot! Thus far in attendance we have RonG and, well, me. S'cuse the cross posting. I have to be in the right mood, but I love moody musical interludes like that on an album of songs. Someone described the effect of waves, surging up, falling back -- a good analogy. One night on a full moon last winter I listened to Merritt while watching the tops of cedar trees swaying in the wind. I was mesmerized. There's a hypnotic beauty in the melody of this song, and you can insert your own thoughts about what it means to you. Sometimes, it's nice when a songwriter lets us do that. Vanessa writes, "it would be something of a feat to really pull it off live" and I agree completely. It would take a band, lots of volume, timpani drums, the works. But it could be so cool. Have any Richard Thompson fans out there ever been there when The Balding One did "Ghosts in the Wind" with a full band? Majestic. - -lee p.s. When they play "Farmer in the Dell" in Utah, how many wives does the farmer get to pull into the circle? ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 8 Jun 2001 16:14:37 -0400 From: Roxylee Subject: [RS] Re: Silence sits... Vanessa asks: What does "where silence sits playing her flute" mean? To me, it signifies: 1) that silence can almost be audible, it speaks so loudly sometimes, and 2) the lonely, unoccupied man sits, with random thoughts playing in his head like the notes of a flute. The melody just goes on and on, aimlessly.... Then again, maybe I'm just weird. :-) Roxy ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 8 Jun 2001 21:51:09 +0100 From: "Arthur Wood" Subject: [RS] New Web Dear All, As of Monday 11th June 2001 I shall be switching Internet Providers. In an attempt to minimise the change I've retained the "kerrkron" name. Please update your Address Book. My new E-Mail address from that date will be : kerrkron@blueyonder.co.uk In addition my current Internet web site at http://wavespace.waverider.co.uk/~kerrkron will cease to operate on or around 28th June 2001. There will be no ongoing link at that location to the new site. Hopefully during June, and preferably in a marginally updated form, I will re-launch the Kerrville Kronikle web site with my new provider. I've retained "kerrkron" as part of the new address, which will be : http://www.kerrkron.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk OK, you asked, and since you're obviously curious, I'll tell you...... "pwp" stands for personal web page. Simple ain't it. I shall reconfirm the latter address to everyone, at the time I re-launch the Kronikle web site. Thanks for your attention. Stay in touch. Best Wishes, Arthur Wood. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 8 Jun 2001 20:21:44 EDT From: VMacmullan@aol.com Subject: Re: [RS] merritt parkway I love Merritt Parkway & not because I drive on it everyday back & forth to work. It is an extremely peaceful song and sorry to say that the Merritt is not terribly peaceful at 7:30am or 5:30pm. (which probably explains the "3am" portion of the title). I was laughing this week because I was listening to the song Somewhere Near Patterson during a particularly hellish trip home on Thursday. Don't get me wrong the Merritt is a beautiful road, but it was not built for the traffic it can get when 95 backs up. Talk about people being "cranky as hell". For the record, my favorite time on the Merritt is mid to late Fall, when the leaves are falling like crazy and nobody else is on the road. virginia In a message dated 6/7/2001 8:00:20 PM Eastern Daylight Time, vcwills@Princeton.EDU writes: > So, am I the only one who actually likes Merritt Parkway? I can't recall the last time I was driving on the MP, but I find the musical interlude to be somewhat soothing, and obviously not a rush hour study. I like it, though, yet would not even think about requesting it at a show. Oh, and on the SOTW subject, I think Roxy hit it. <> you're not weird, roxy. nt ------------------------------ End of shindell-list-digest V3 #188 ***********************************
