Is there nothing we can talk about? Here's one thing I've been pondering--Richard isn't on enough compilation/tribute records. Why? He always does a masterful job covering other people's material. I, for one, would like to see him getting more of this kind of recognition. He's had such wonderful momentum in his career in the last year. I'd hate to see him lose any wind in those sails of his. I'm not sure if he's even going to be at Falcon Ridge this summer. A head's up to RonG--sorry I missed your gig this past Friday night. I had it in my head to give you a call or drop you an email because I really wanted to come. Hopefully, the next one. Let us know on List if you could so we can mark it on our calendars. Sure do wish Richard had been on the "Nod to Bob" CD. He would have been a much better choice than some who were included. Heck, even the one new song he HAD written, "Hideous Grin," John Putnam told me at Makor that Richard just wasn't happy with it and that it was going back in the shop for more work. While I don't know whether he'll be at Falcon Ridge (heck, neither will I, since it's become pretty public knowldege that when it comes to festivals in general, RonG would rather shave his head with a cheese grater while chewing on tin foil), I know he's back in the area later this summer, with two shows at the Turning Point on August 26th. >> Here's one thing I've been pondering--Richard isn't on enough compilation/tribute records. Why? << I searched through the archives, because I seem to recall the Honorable Mr. Hunter pontificating on compilations (I almost wrote "complications," and that's probably not too far from the truth, eh, Charlie?) at the point when Katie "Still Trying to Decide Whether She Wants to Marry Ellis Paul or Dave Carter" Mahoney was picking the list's collective brain (and I use that term loosely) for suggestions on how to Make Richard a Household Name. But I can't find it. My guess is that it's not really up to Richard to get himself on compilations or tribute projects. It's probably a combination of the compilation producer WANTING Richard, Richard WANTING to do it, and Charlie pushing to make it happen, which I guess can be a moot point if the first two points are not positively received. I mean, for example, I thought that the 1999 Gram Parsons tribute CD would have been PERFECT for Richard. He's clearly a fan of GP, and he already DOES two of the songs that made the CD, "Sin City" and "Hickory Wind." But Emmylou "We Don't Need No Stinkin' Folksingers" Harris opted to fill the CD with all her new alt-country pals (Whiskeytown, Wilco, Mavericks and, um, The Pretenders) instead. Go figure. >> Sure do wish Richard had been on the "Nod to Bob" CD. He would have been a much better choice than some who were included. << Here, it's politics and label promotion. The "Nod to Bob" CD was a Red House project, and God forbid they should look outside their own internal roster of usual suspects (Lucy, Gorka, Greg Brown) for performers that might make sense for the project. At the end of the day, I'm guessing it's easier to get the planets to line up (what's that called . . . the Harmonica Convention?) than it is to get an artist on a tribute CD. >> A head's up to RonG--sorry I missed your gig this past Friday night. I had it in my head to give you a call or drop you an email because I really wanted to come. Hopefully, the next one. Let us know on List if you could so we can mark it on our calendars. << Thanks . . . the gig went pretty well, although this time I only did seven RS songs instead of my usual 15-16. I don't want to get too shamelessly self-promoting, but my schedule's always up on www.musi-cal.com, and the next one (in Glen Rock, anyway) will be Saturday, July 7th. Anyone can feel free to contact me off-list for directions or more information. Finally, for anyone who wants to hear some incredible new music and has been living under a rock for the last few weeks, the new Dave Carter & Tracy Grammer CD, "Drum Hat Buddha," is now available through www.signature-sounds.com. It's an incredible CD, with Tracy taking on a much more prominent role, singing lead on half of the CD's twelve cuts. The opening track, "Ordinary Town," is an amazing lyrical tour-de-force, lemme tell ya. Word from Portland, where they've been having CD release parties this weekend, is that the new material is as powerful live as on the CD. They'll be here in the NY area at Makor on July 26, doing a split-bill with Pete & Maura Kennedy, so that's a "no-miss" show. Also, feel free to check out Yahoo! eGroups for information on the Dave & Tracy discussion list. But if they do a tribute to him they would need Dar too since she loves him so. You could have alot of fun with titles for that project...everything rhymes with Paul. Ok well not "everything."
