Richard sold well over 500 copies a week for the first few months, and now, a year later, it has slowed to maybe 100 a week. You also start to get returns (from "buy in" programs where a store agrees to take x number of copies if you agree to purchase a listening post for y amount of time. At the end of the "program", they return the bulk of any unsold copies. So, PATERSON has sold close to 26,000 copies in its first year. Our goal was 18,000 copies, with a high end projection of - if we were lucky - 25,000. In the past, the most RS has sold in the first year is approximately 12,000. Cry3 did about 50,000 copies in its first year. PATERSON is by far Richard's best selling album. It has now fully recouped, which is virtually unheard of in an album's first year. - - Charlie ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 23 May 2001 17:07:57 GMT From: jalvo@mbay.net (John Alvord) Subject: Re: [RS] Album Sales On Wed, 23 May 2001 09:24:03 +0000, Charlie of Young/Hunter wrote: >Re: Richard's Album Sales > >Listers - >What happens with album sales for an artist with a "cult" following is that >you sell a lot at the beginning, then it slows down considerably (Ani >DiFranco, for instance, debuts in Billboard at, like, #50 then drops out of >the Top 200 in the next week or two). Everyone should remember that the record deal was set up so RS shares a lot more of the revenues... as well as paying more the the expenses. That 100/week rate represents a pretty nice income. john ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 23 May 2001 13:06:38 -0400 From: "Shelley DePaul" Subject: [RS] Apology and Garnet Just wanted to post my apologies for the petition. Actually, it was sort of a spur of the moment thing. The post popped in, and I signed it and popped it back out. Should have given it more thought. My apologies to those who were troubled by it. To make up for it I will share a recent Garnet show with you I went to see Garnet Rogers in Saratoga Springs (Cafe Lena, small, intimate venue) last weekend. He is, of course, well-known as Stan's little brother, but I have always been enthralled with him in his own light. I arrived late and was ushered to a table (all to myself since it was stage left which, I guess, no one likes) which practically touched the stage, as well as all of his amazing guitars, which I examined thoroughly. It's been 5 or 6 years since I last saw him at Godfreys. I've been listening to his newest CD, Sparrow's Wing, (sublime recording!) which had a very nostalgic effect, so off I went. He talked a great deal more here than I remember his doing in the past. Stories (most very amusing) about Stan and himself, his wife (in particular, a certain dress, impossible to remove, which he went on and on about in great length, while reminiscing about simpler days when no bras and t-shirts were the style), recent tours with Greg, and much more. The evening was casual and cozy, the performance, as always, Powerful. We had a rousing, well-harmonized chorus of Shotover River (Farewell to the Gold) which left us all ashivers, and to which Garnet responded, with some emotion, "Well done!" A very fulfilling evening which kept me company all the way home (4 hours). If you don't have Sparrow's Wing, you should get it. And I know most of you have seen Garnet, but if not, he's not one to let slip by. OK, off to work Take care all Shelley ------------------------------ End of shindell-list-digest V3 #172 ***********************************
