I'm a newby. I just rec'd my first digest of your most recent postings. I also attended my first RS concert this past Thursday evening in Berkeley. *sigh* I melt when he sings. OK ... so, I'm going to ask some questions here and feel free to respond off-list if you think what I'm asking is old-news being rehashed. Thanks. 1. Does anyone have a set list for the Freight and Salvage show last Thursday? 2. What's the thing about requesting "Free Bird"? Why did that get started? 3. A little more than halfway through Thursday's set, Richard explained that listening to 2 albums when he was 14 saved his life, so to speak ... one was Bruce Springsteen's "The Wild, the Innocent, and the E Street Shuffle/Greetings from Asbury Park" .. the other one was a bluegrass album but I didn't catch the name of it or the name of the artist. Any ideas? Thanks ... jean ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 13 May 2001 12:33:43 EDT From: Rongrittz@aol.com Subject: Re: [RS] greetings from a list newby First of all, Jean, welcome to the list. Nice to have newbies pop their heads in once in a while. Can't help you with questions #1, and I think question #2 is just that calling out for "Free Bird" to acts who would never do the song in a million years has become a pretty accepted joke, although I, for one, have long since stopped thinking it was funny. Go figure. Can't tell you how it started, though. Probably at some Lynyrd Skynyrd concert, I reckon. ;-) >> A little more than halfway through Thursday's set, Richard explained that listening to 2 albums when he was 14 saved his life, so to speak ... one was Bruce Springsteen's "The Wild, the Innocent, and the E Street Shuffle/Greetings from Asbury Park" .. the other one was a bluegrass album but I didn't catch the name of it or the name of the artist. Any ideas? << He has said on occasion that the bluegrass album "Old & In The Way" also saved him from the "dreaded art rock" of the mid-70's, and he occasionally does "The Hobo Song" from that classic album. Here's the scoop, for anyone who's interested. RG __________________ Old & In the Way was a one-shot bluegrass band whose legacy lasted far longer than the band. Led by Grateful Dead member Jerry Garcia (banjo, vocals), the band also featured David Grisman (mandolin, vocals), Vassar Clements (fiddle), Peter Rowan (guitar, vocals), and John Kahn (bass). Garcia formed the band in 1973 as a way to revisit his bluegrass roots and demonstrate his affection for the music. To round out the lineup, he recruited Clements and Kahn, as well as Grisman and Rowan, who were both West Coast session musicians that had previously played together in the band Muleskinner. Taking their name from a Grisman composition, Old & In the Way played a handful of gigs, most of them at the Boarding House in San Francisco in October. An album, also called Old & In the Way, was culled from these shows but not released until 1975 on the Grateful Dead's own record label, Round. The record combined standards and Rowan originals, which later became standards. Although the album was the only one the lineup released during the 1970s, the members continued to play together in various permutations over the next two decades and the record continued to sell steadily. The group reunited after Garcia's death in 1995, releasing a second album (actually composed of 1973 recordings) That High Lonesome Sound, in early 1996. A third album of 1973 vintage appeared at the end of 1997. -- Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 13 May 2001 10:01:17 -0700 From: "Susan Krauss" Subject: [RS] Sitting down Chiming in (finally) on Thursday's show (been busy watching my beloved Mets get creamed by the Giants)....anyway, I was wondering if he sat down because he was sick. He seemed a little out of it to me - like he was tired or fighting something. It is the first time I've seen him sit as well. I thought it was an excellent set and am continually impressed by his guitar playing. I too loved the interplay with the audience and his mom chiming in. As for the Dar article not mentioning Cry3 - I think it's because Cry3 is over and they're really trying to focus on the solo careers and not give anyone hopes that there will be a reunion. Thanks for the mention of Nina's record being out (she was at the Freight to watch the show on Thursday and I was hoping she was going to play). susan (who's met Pete but can't believe that Tricia and I haven't connected yet) (Anyone going to see Mark Knopfler on Friday night?) ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 13 May 2001 13:10:25 -0400 From: patrick t power Subject: [RS] Sparrows Point I was at the cdbaby.com site a bit ago and came across a CD by a group called Sparrows Point . . .
