I once made two tapes for my girlfriend at the time . . . one tape with the most beautiful love songs I could imagine, and one tape with the most heart-wrenching "love no more" songs I could imagine. And "You Again" made BOTH tapes. << Ya know, if the chronology is YA first, SW,CD second, perhaps it's not such a bad thing, Ron. A hard step but not the last step. Maybe there's another installment yet to come? The one where they do get back together and live happily ever after in the city of clean air? Is that what Buenos Aires translates too? =) So, I'm guessing some Latin rhythm number with the flamenco guitar Elwestrand's been jonzin' for... john ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 10 Apr 2001 23:03:50 +0200 From: Katrin.Uhl@t-online.de (Katrin Uhl) Subject: RE: [RS] song title > I once made two > tapes for my girlfriend at the time . . . one tape with the most > beautiful love songs I could imagine, and one tape with the most > heart-wrenching "love no more" songs I could imagine. People who are important to you on a cellular level. There are a couple people who are out of my life at the moment, who I just honestly love unconditionally and I don't care what they do or don't do with their lives - they "are always welcome here." I will always welcome them into my life. This song reminds me of them. Now when I meet Mr. Perfect for me, maybe this song will also be about him. Anybody seen him btw? Much I as like Ellis Paul, who backs Lori on the CD, the Respond version of the song with spare instrumentation and Kris Delmhorst on harmony will always be the definitive incarnation for me. << EXCELLENT example. When I heard the song on the "Respond" CD, I was absolutely stunned. Subtle. Brilliant. Nothing included just for its own sake. On "Pieces of Me," which -- if I'm not mistaken -- utilizes Lori's same vocal track from "Respond," all of a sudden there's this instrusive drum part, giving the song a rhythm it just doesn't need, and Ellis Paul's whiny voice where Kris's sultry one use to be. Maybe it was decided that the CD didn't need another slow ballad (particularly after the weeper "Never Die Young," featuring Mr. Shindell), but as Dave says, it's a perfect example of putting stuff where stuff just don't need to be. I can't remember the technicalities of it, but she says that she recorded it with old equipment to get a more classic sound. She really achieves it and the whole thing has sort of a friendly familiar feeling. You can really imagine hearing it on a cheap turntable or AM radio - and I don't mean that in a bad way. This is why I love D&T's first record, "When I Go." I wasn't surprised to read that it was mostly recorded in Tracy's kitchen. And it sounds great all sparse and natural and naked like that. - -- john andrew clary "The music business is a cruel and shallow money trench, a long plastic hallway where thieves and pimps run free, and good men die like dogs. I mean, at first listen, you might think it's a basic (as if Richard could ever be basic) "I've missed you since you died" love song, but as I look at the lyrics, I wonder what else is going on . . . any ideas? BTW, I've never been a huge fan of this song, primarily because after the incredible 2nd through 6th songs on "Sparrows Point" I'm usually too wiped out to continue. But I know this song is a favorite of a lot of people. RG MEMORY OF YOU It's uncanny, it's something strange It's something I have long tried to ignore Behind the curtain, behind the door If I keep my eyes cast down It just might go away It's got no name and it's got no shape It can't be photographed And it lives in no one place It's got no shame and it knows no grace And it's got two long arms reaching out for me I hit the light I'll take my stand Let's have your best Show your hand The shadows run And I see true It's just the memory of you So what's your pleasure my phantom friend? What thing could bring you out To haunt this world again? Some sweet revenge? Some dread command? Or do you only need someone to hold your hand? Why did you leave Your will so vague? Just three blue lines Across the page: You keep the vase I'll keep the rose And the memory of you ------------------------------ End of shindell-list-digest V3 #125 ***********************************
