Martin" Subject: [RS] State List Leftovers The best source of songs about Wisconsin is Lou & Peter Berryman. They made a cassette album about a decade ago of nothing but songs about Wisconsin. I don't have their URL handy, but a search will turn it up easily. Some of their WI songs have made it to CD: "Have You Heard About The Heat?" from Some Kinda Funny "State of the Art" from Cow Imagination "Wonderful Madison", "Cheese & Beer & Snow", and "Madison, Wisconsin" all from House Concert. Here's "Wonderful Madison" for a sample: c 1984, 1999 L & P Berryman She wears her lakes like a diamond tiara Her necklace is known as the mighty Yahara Around her the beltline is draped like a garland And brings in commuters from way past McFarland Chorus Oh Wonderful Madison mother of cities Queen of all Dairyland, waiting for me Wonderful Madison, jewel of Wisconsin With more than one high school and cable TV Hard working mother you lion of business From Shopko to Oscar's and all through the Isthmus But if getting a job doesn't seem to be prudent You can take out a loan and return as a student When fat men with briefcases grab her attentions She knows that they want her to host their conventions Where bankers and shriners with laptop computers Buy cheese for their wives on their way out to Hooters Sweet mother Madison full of compassion A liberal community after a fashion You don't have to worry if you do annoy her 'Cause for every person there's more than one lawyer Stand on the shoreline of town as you enter Stand and admire the convention center See how it hangs off the shore like a goiter But don't stand there long, it's illegal to loiter - --------------- For Pennsylvania, doesn't Dave Mallett have a song called Pennsylvania Sunset? And there's a Rudyard Kipling song set to music by Peter Bellamy called "Philadelphia" recorded by John Roberts and Tony Barrand on Naulakha Redux http://www.sover.net/~barrand It's about looking for historical things and people in Philadelphia that no longer exist. The last verse is: If you're off to Philadelphia this morning And you wish to prove the truth of what I say I pledge my word you'll find The pleasant land behind Is unaltered since Red Jacket rode that way Still the pinewoods scent the noon Still the catbird sings its tune Still autumn sets the maple forest blazing Still the grapevine throught the dusk Flings its soul compelling musk Still the fireflies in the corn make night amazing They are there, there, there with Earth Immortal Citizens, I bring you friendly warning The things that really last After men and times have passed They are all in Pennsylvania this morning - ---------------- And no compilation of state songs would be complete without the Berrymans' generic one, "Your State's Name Here" c 1988 L & P Berryman from What, Again?! Sometimes when the grass is blown by the breeze There's a far-away look in the leaves of the trees A memory returns, heartbreakingly clear Of a place I call home: [your state's name here] No sky could be deeper, no water so clear As back in the meadows of [your state's name here] I'm gonna go back, although I don't know when There's no other place like [your state's name again] Chorus Oh [Your state's name here], Oh [again], What a state! I have not been back since [a reasonable date] Where the asphalt grows soft in July every year In the warm summer mornings of [your state's name here] My grandpa would come and turn on the game And fall asleep drinking [your local beer's name] While grandma would sing in the garden for hours To all of [the names of indiginous flowers] The songs that she sang were somewhat obscure She learned from the local townspeople, I'm sure The language they use is not very clear Like [place a colloquialism right here] I'd love to wake up where the [state songbird] sings Where they manufacture [the names of some things] Like there on the bumper a sticker so clear First an 'I', then a heart, and then [your state's name here] Whisper it soft, it's a song to my ear [your state's name here], [your state's name here] It's there I was born and it's there I'll grow old By her rivers of blue and her arches of gold - ------------------- That'll do for now. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 24 Mar 2001 12:21:21 EST From: TOBYGOLDBE@aol.com Subject: Re: [RS] State List Leftovers New Mexico - In the Lowell George song, Willin', the chorus starts "I've been from Tucson to Tucumcari....." Am I the only one who knows that the state song for Rhode Island is "Stand By Your Clam"? On that note, how about a Richard show on Block Island? It's a great place to visit after all the summer madness -- the Harvest Festival in October would be perfect. ------------------------------ End of shindell-list-digest V3 #111 ***********************************
