Subject: [RS] RS Misc A couple of observations... 1. We're aiming to release the new live Richard record at the beginning of 2002. Being good capitalists, however, we are planning to offer copies for sale to listmembers in time for the Holidays of 01. I am awaiting my copies of the raw tapes with great excitement.... casn't wait to see what we got! I had to be in Texas for SXSW, so didn't make it to any of the shows, but I figure I would have just acted nervous, so it was probably just as well I wasn't there. 2. In terms of the tape trading. As many of you know, we try to be 'taper friendly,' but I, for one (as a listmember), do not wish to read about it on the RS list. And, as I reiterate any time anyone asks, please no exchange of unauthorized RS tapes for money. Then I become Unreasonable & Petulant. I think we are going to have a great live record! - - Charlie ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 19 Mar 2001 09:31:10 -0800 From: "Clary, John (CLRY)" Subject: RE: [RS] RS Misc. Charlie described himself as: >> Then I become Unreasonable & Petulant. << In response to tapers trading for cash. To which I say: You ain't being unreasonable at all. I own a couple boots myself because I "needed" an acoustic version of SW/CD and had to hear Cry3 live, but the Emelin shows should have been treated as taboo imho, exactly for the reason that they'd be great to have as bootlegs: The shows were absolutely gonna kick ass because they were being recorded right from the board for Richard's live record. I think Richard deserves a little more respect than trading Emelin shows gives him. And yeah while I'm at it, I think Napster is evil. - -- john andrew clary home mailto:john.cleirigh@juno.com work mailto:clry@chevron.com "the music business is a cruel and shallow money trench, a long plastic hallway where thieves and pimps run free, and good men die like dogs. there's also a negative side." ~ hunter s. thompson ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 19 Mar 2001 13:49:23 -0500 From: Elwestrand Subject: [RS] Tape Trading - Rant Well I understand the general point about tape trading. However, I, who will never get to see Richard and Lucy together cause I am on the West coast where we aren't worthy of them coming and playing together - even though they come and play seperately - am totally unrepentant of wanting the tape of Emelin NOW. The list yaks on and on about these shows and I may never have the priviledge. And what about the poor listers in Europe. They could wait two years to hear a new song. And also if we don't occasionally mention on the list that we have tapes to trade, then how are we supposed to make contact with other likeminded listers? I am not saying that the list should be an endless litany of tape trading but I don't see the sin of an occasionally request or offer. And a bootleg is different then the official recording. You get to hear all the talking, crowd interaction, mistakes, jokes etc. It is not the same as what makes it to the CD. It is more personal and fun for a fan and possible annoying to a non-fan. I am agressively seeking a bootleg with Dar's new song on it cause she currently has no plans to come here and I don't want to wait a year to hear her new song. I mean we're on this list cause we are a little over-the-top about RS. If we didn't want special access and inside info we wouldn't be here. I don't like the implication that we are somehow hurting these artist by trading tapes. I have bought and given multiple copies of their CD's to friends and relatives. I have paid to take multiple people to their shows. I think I have done just the opposite of hurting them. And will I abuse my copy of either of these tapes? No. And will I buy the Live CD? Of course. I can't imagine the person who would only listen to the bootleg. I mean if your fan enough to want bootlegs of a show would you really not buy the real thing? I assume this is why Young Hunter is "tape friendly." I imagine if you are the a big star people will buy your bootlegs, but I have trouble imagining the pathetic person who would spend time selling bootlegs for our relatively obscure musical heroes. That person would really need to get a life. OK end rant. When you put yourself in the public eye as a performer in whatever guise, you do sign off on losing a bit of your privacy and anonymity as a tradeoff for the path you have chosen. Doesn't mean you have to be nice or even acknowledge your fans, but you do have to recognize that you have become a part of their lives and are apt to have to deal with their advances in one form or another. To many fans, someone with an album out or a tv weatherman or whatever is going to remain a larger than life figure, far removed from the person they really are. It's all part of the deal, and while the occassional wacko is something we as hopefully intelligent, caring consumers and musical enthusiasts will shake our heads at and discourage, it is something any public figure is going to have to learn to deal with. Hopefully, it's infrequent or unobtrusive enough on a folk level that it doesn't discourage the performers from some social interaction after the shows. That's one thing that i've always appreciated is being able to get a disc autographed and spend a minute or two chatting- and i personally try to make it brief, figuring there is very little i can add that the performer is going to care about when it's all said and done... although sometimes you'd be surprised, i ended up talking to david wilcox for almost a half hour once we hit on the common thread of off-road motorcycles, pentons in particular... And it's also up to the performer to draw the lines at what they are not comfortable with: "I'm sorry, I'm having a meal with my family, I'd rather not sign an autograph" or "I'm sorry, I make it a practice not to accept gifts since i have to fly back to Argentina..." or whatever. I saw Willie Nelson once having breakfast at the holiday inn in johnstown. I really wanted to go say hello... but I also didn' want to bother him. He looked over at me and nodded, i nodded back. Later when we were both leaving I think I just said "I would have liked to have said hello, but I didn't want to bother you when you were eating." And he said he appreciated that a great deal, and initiated a conversation with me about old time country music. Seemed like a pretty nice guy... but mostly, seemed genuinely appreciative that I had shown him a little respect. (Now have I deluded myself that either Willie or wilcox would know me from Adam? Naaaaaah... although there was the time lucy kaplansky hugged me...) Jim ------------------------------ End of shindell-list-digest V3 #98 **********************************
