She has always been like that. I remember when "Temptation" came out and she was on Cook and Chase, that inane talk show that used to be on TNN. VERY conservative country. And she sat there through the interview smoking and answering all the questions in monosyllables. For country this is complete heresy. Most of them are perky and respectful, if indistinguishable from each other, particularly the men--no matter how cute some of them may look in a pair of tight wranglers. And I thought, now SHE is a cool one. And went out and got the cd. Which is very good by the way. But who can take the Granny's Seriously? Stainless Steeley Dan? Lenny "Carbon Copy" Kravitz? It's a toss up over which of the major award shows are the biggest joke. But the Granny's are a major contender for THAT award. I was surprised by Emmylou winning Best Contemp Folk. I love the SOUND of it--Malcolm Burns is a good producer (get Sinead Lohan's "No Mermaid" cd which is really wonderful). But the songs are just so...okay. Emmy has written some wonderful things in the past, but these songs made me just sorta shrug my shoulders. And I am a HUUUUUUUUGGGGGGEEEEEE Emmy fan. If anyone has a copy of "13" for sale let me know (wink, wink). But most of 2000 was like that, which is why I still can't seem to find the enthusiasm to put together a best of 2000 list. About the only consistent, all-around good albums of the year were Richard's, Patti Smith's, PJ Harvey's, Aimee Mann's, Janis Ian's and my favorite of the year--Kirsty MacColl's "Tropical Brainstorm." I am still in mourning over the freak death of Kirsty. Three really really good reissues: The Best of Broadside, Marshall Crenshaw's greatest hits (his obscurity is a greater crime than the Florida election debacle) and The Beatles' 1 for the remastering. Lots of okay to good albums, but nothing spectacular. And about the only *new* artists I heard that were worth listening to were Teddy Thompson (though again, lots of eh songs) and Badly Drawn Boy. There were lots of albums with good--even great--individual songs on them (David Gray--whose "Babylon" is just spectacular, Marianne Faithfull--MY Idea of a Gay Man's Diva, Tracy Chapman, Belle & Sebastian, Shelby Lynne, The 6ths, Sleater-Kinney immediately come to mind). But all in all I thought 2000 overall the weakest year for music since I started seriously listening when I was about 10 and discovered the 4Js: Janis Ian, Joni Mitchell, Joan Baez and Judy Collins. And I am (gulp) 36. As a wonderful Maria McKee song I love says, "Am I the Only One Who's Ever Felt This Way?" But this brings me to my point, which is that I want to respectfully disagreee with your statement that 2000 was a bland year for music. Nickel Creek's album, for one thing, is phenomenal. And if you like Alt. Country, you *have* to check out Caitlin Cary's EP, "Waltzie." She's the other singer (besides Ryan Adams, who also put out a great solo album last year) from the band Whiskeytown. Check her out (hey hey hey). Which brings me to Peter Mulvey's "The Trouble with Poets." A brilliant piece of work. And I've heard some grumbling about Patty Larkin on this list, but I can't figure out why--her 2000 album "Regrooving the Dream" is one of the most poetic, dreamy, sonic-ly delicious albums in a very long while. And Emmylou's "Red Dirt Girl" is in that category, too. When was the last time you heard a song as heartbreaking and gorgeous as the title track? There were *so* many great records made last year--Kasey Chambers' "The Captain," Niamh Parsons' "In My Prime," Dave and Tracy's "Tanglewood Tree," Deb Talan's "Something Burning." Just my opinion, but I couldn't have been happier about music last year. At 11:23 AM 2/23/01 -0500, you wrote: >But you gotta love Shelby. She has always been like that. They mainly play guitar, mandolin, and banjo and it's folky, rootsy, jazzy, old-timey, rag-timey, gorgeous music. 3 lilting voices, very relaxed and loopy (they can make the word "snow" into "snoohhh-ooo"). I'm completely hooked on the CD ("Blue Train"). Their website is slightly funky (on my computer, anyway - I have to change my background colours in Netscape to read the text & also the MP3's don't seem to be working) but it's, predictably: www.begoodtanyas.com. Anyway, according to their site, they're hitting the east coast next month: March 28 - The Living Room, NYC March 30 - The Bitter End, NYC April 2 - Club Passim, Boston I know the Passim show is an Open Mic feature (as opposed to a headlining gig) but I'm not sure about the NYC dates. In any case, check 'em out - you won't be disappointed. My other "big discovery" of the weekend was a band from Alberta called GREAT UNCLE BULL, but I'll be damned if I can find any info about them on the web. I'll keep trying, though... Kerry :) NP: Well, duh.
