Which is excellent news, IMHO. I still wouldn't bet the rent on him including "The Weather," though. ;-) RG ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 4 Feb 2001 21:58:56 +0100 From: Katrin.Uhl@t-online.de (Katrin Uhl) Subject: RE: [RS] Name The Live Album - Win Valuable Prizes > Name the Live Album > > Ron G. Yeah. OK, now on to the music. :-) Tonight, I attended the 8:30 show at The Point in Bryn Mawr, PA. As far as I know, there were no listers there. Shame! I know that there are other listers from the Philly area. First of all, I did not know that James Keelaghan was opening. What a pleasant surprise! That man has a beautiful, rich voice, and his guitar was amazing. I loved every bit of, especially CMW, of course. Rad did not do James any favors. I won't beat that horse for too long, as I know Rad has been discussed many times and at length, but . . . geez. As for Richard. Like I said, I had gone too long without seeing a Richard show. He seemed different than before--looser. Not sure if that had more to do with a shift in attitudes or with the bottle of scotch that Point staff had left him in his dressing room. ;-) I ran into him before the show, he was kind and eager to chat as ever, seemed a little high-energy, but hey, that's a good thing, right? :-) First song, something Irish (?). Oh, shame on me, I have no idea what the tune was, and he didn't say. Other than that, won't even try to remember the order, but he did Arrowhead, which he's changed up a little bit--holding out the last note of each verse, using his voice more as an instrument, accompanying the guitar--I liked it. I asked him after the show--he said he was playing with moving up a third and feeling his way around the chord, vocally. It worked--I liked. Rad played accordion on this--I actually liked that, too. When Rad is on, he's on--it's just that . . . oh, never mind. He did Lazy--and Rad played his pocket change! This sounded quite good in fact--they even made a big show of getting the right amount of pocket change, and the right mix of alloys going. He tapped his pocket as Richard played--man, this sounded beautiful. AYHN got no laughs from the audience. I thought that was weird. Either this was a Richard-crowd (because there were also no big whoops and hollers for Cry3 songs, either) or, they just had no sense of humor and were really strange. I prefer to believe the latter. THat said, I'd just as well that he hadn't done it, but it's a good song for bringing in new fans. Wisteria was positively beautiful. Had less soul to it than in previous shows, but still gorgeous. He did Nora! Man, I love Nora. I tend to think of it as Richard's Leonard Cohen song, but that is in a good way. He achieves such a level of alienated emotion and sense of loss . . . sounded remarkably like it does on Sparrow's Point--no real surprises, but totally spellbinding. Fishing, as it always does, made me cry. The man performed "By Now." I didn't know whether to clap when he was done, or to dial 911. CREEPY. I know I've heard that the song was creepy live. I've heard the song a thousand times on the CD. But man, I did not like being in the same room with him while he sang that song. Gave me the CREEPS. Slower than on Sparrow's Point, more haunting, and vocals way better--deeper, richer. Used more of that nasal quality--gave it a tone that punched through the atmospheric darkness of the guitar. Very nice. But creepy. Transit--lovely as always. Some flubbed lines--who cares? Friend of the Devil--he did this right after Arrowhead. I had a friend with me (as well as my mom and brother) who is a big Grateful Dead fan. He was blown away, and remarked on how RIchard really made the song his own. I thought it was completely beautiful. Shades of Gray--mmm, seemed a little perfunctory. But even RIchard going through the motions is better than most of the pap you'll see out there. The song was still awesome, even if it didn't feel like his soul was totally in it (AYHN suffered from this, too, but can you blame him?) Confession rocked, as per usual. He played the blues! Sittin' On Top of the World--how did I forget to tell him how awesome he sounded on this? And Rad did some really killer piano solos--I mean, really good. I wish he could have maintained this level of musicianship throughout the whole show. THere was not a lot of banter. Some Canada jokes ("What's a Canadian dime? A nickle.") Appreciative remarks about the scotch, and about the creepiness of "By Now." This show made me realize several things: 1) I never, EVER, want to see anyone perform By Now ever again--particularly RIchard. I'm glad I saw it once, but once is really enough. 2) Rad should come with an instruction label that says "Use sparingly." 3) Richard is a genius, and I am _extremely_ lucky to have found his music, and to attend his shows, because this is the kind of talent they'll still be analyzing and dissecting long after we're all dead. 4) Richard is quite handsome. OK, so maybe that's not really a "musical" comment. Shoot me. ;-) Peace, Love, and Mischief, Vanessa P.S. The man looks thin! What are they (not) feeding him???
