Rather than calling her a bluegrass artist, I prefer to think of her as a great singer-songwriter who happens to ply her trade in the bluegrass genre. She writes about relationships, social issues and all kinds of great stuff. I happened across her a few years ago at the Delaware Valley Bluegrass Festival in Woodstown, NJ, and was blown away. Great music, great lyrics, great playing! Her following is much greater out West than here on the East Coast, but I try to catch her every time she's around Philadelphia. I envy those who get to see her often. And I was glad to hear her on Prairie Home Companion a couple weeks ago. Yay! This was the first time I'd ever seen Richard perform and it was a marvelous experience! He was absolutely charming and -- lucky me -- he sang all but two of my favorites! I got misty-eyed during a couple of them -- and I know I wasn't the only person snuffling during Arbuleta. As the show progressed I was increasingly concerned that he wasn't going to sing 'Transit," but I need not have worried -- we were rewarded with an *outstanding* rendition. I had an opportunity to meet him after the show while he was signing my CD and he seemed like a genuinely nice, down-to-earth person and he was incredibly patient with the long line of fans. The audience, by the way, was totally receptive and 'into' the show, but they were almost eerily polite and well-behaved -- one one was shouting out song titles between numbers or making smartass comments. Not one person yelled "Freebird!" Kind of a nice change from the last few shows I've seen at Rosebud.
