I'll be alright... ah, wonderful song. Works wonders for me. > Go see her in concert, is my recommendation. And talk to > her afterwards. WFUV just put up their listener poll for 2000, and SNP comes in at number 9. Our other objects of interest, Dave and Tracy, come in at 33 with Tanglewood Tree which is kind of interesting since I've never even heard them play any of their cuts on FUV, though John Platt includes them on his "best of" list. Go to http://www.wfuv.org/ for the gory details and staff choices (John Platt also lists Richard with some nice comments...I like that John Platt...too bad I'm in church when he broadcasts!). I don't know Shelby Lynne's album but have seen it all over the record stores. The Emmylou Harris is INDEED an amazing album and definitely worthy of being in the "top 3" for the year. Anyone who doesn't have it should go get it! It's so so so beautiful...and her cover of Patty Griffin's "One Big Love" with Patty singing background vocals is just outstanding...really outstanding... My top ten albums of Y2K, in no particular order other than the order in which they occur to me: Emmylou Harris-Red Dirt Girl Richard Shindell-Somewhere Near Patterson Radiohead-Kid A Dar Williams-The Geren World Jess Klein-Draw Them Near William Orbit-Pieces in a Modern Style Tara MacLean-Passenger The Cure-Bloodflowers Joni Mitchell-Both Sides Now Aimee Mann-Bachelor No. 2 I think that's pretty much all the albums I even purchased that were made in the last year. I am totally under its spell. I am obsessed with a couple of the songs and they will not leave my head. I know that Jack has influenced Richard and Lucy and you can see why. His songs have emotion, scope, beauty and most importantly magic. I can't recommend him to everyone because his voice is a bit of an acquired taste and his music is heavily influenced by the Celtic tradition. so if you don't like that sort of thing. But luckily for me I do. The songs are of heartbreak, hope and have a fiercely independent streak. And I cannot believe how poignant the heartbreak songs are. Something about hearing an old man sing these songs makes them even worse. And there is an amazing song, "West of Dingle" which has a subtle feminist bent. I like every song, which is saying something because the CD has fourteen songs and is 72 minutes long. 2) Dar Williams - The Green World LE This album in another year would probably be number one for me. It is a work of inspiration and hope. In a year where I was struggling I am sure I would have clung to this one. It is a relief to be in a good place and not need (emotionally) an album like this. I got to enjoy it with a little detachment as opposed to how I needed and devoured her others. However, I do see it as magnificient and chatting with Dar on this tour just reinforces how totally unique and goddess-like she is. I know some people don't "get her" and that's OK. But to those of us who do, it is hard to describe her impact. 3) Richard Shindell - SNP Well why waste time preaching to the choir? This is a perfect album full of finely crafted timeless tunes. However, for me personally there is not a particular song that I feel is "my" song. That resonates particularly with me. That is why it is three and not one. Blue Divide and Sparrow's Point would certainly be #1 in any year. 4) Peter Mulvey- The Trouble with Poets I am certain I will never stop listening to this. It may also take till "never" to unravel all the nuances in playing and lyrics. And he gets special mention for his version of the Ocean which will forever endear him to me (even though it is not on this CD). 5) The Nields - If You Lived Here You'd be Home by Now. This is a solid album I have enjoyed listening to. The Nields just keep getting better. Now if only Nerissa would do a solo album. I may be in the minority, but I love her voice. And she writes most of the songs anyways. There are several standout tracks on this album. Honorable Mention: Erin Mckeon -Distillation I don't love this one as an album, but there are some amazing songs. She is great live and I look forward to hearing more from her. Best Soundtracks: Gladiator - The best "big" soundtrack since Conan. Some people are afraid of "big" but why have expensive stereos if there is nothing around to blow the speakers? A couple tracks have incredible vocals and percussion and guitar. Titan AE - This is definitely a guilty pleasure. It is like somebody found it in a timecapsule from the 70's. Big decadent rock songs. Just for fun Other albums In Heavy Rotation this year: Mark Erelli - eponymous, Lyle Lovett - Live in Texas, Al Stewart and Lawrence Juber- Life Between the Wars, Kris Delmhorst - Appetite, James Keelaghen and Oscar Lopez - Compadres (this album is sort of a dream come true folk music and flamenco in the same place - weird at first but amazing), Narada Higher Octave Sampler (99 cents at Tower, and has kept me dancing around my house all year). Songs of The Year: O Canada Girls- Dar (If you get this song it is breathtaking, moving and painful and soothing all at the same time - stunning) One Hundred Names - The Nields West of Dingle - Jack Hardy Confession - RS Tender Blindspot - Peter Mulvey Erin McKeown - La Petite Mort I know that was long - but which one of my children do I leave out???? Happy Holidays to everyone. I hope 2001 is a year of great joy and prosperity for you all. Sincerely, E P.S. - This was my first year on this or any list and it was a blast! Thank you one and all and a special thanks to our hosts. ________________________________________________ Get your own "800" number Voicemail, fax, email, and a lot more http://www.ureach.com/reg/tag ------------------------------ End of shindell-list-digest V2 #384 ***********************************
