That is, like Suzanne Vega, he doesn't overly ornament the songs with vocal lines. He is more like a reporter telling us the story. So it would be interesting, I thought, to go in two directions as far as a possible duet. One would be to pair him with an equally "cool" singer like Suzanne or Rosanne Cash (I am listening to her astounding amazingly underrated "Interiors" as I type this). A story song involving two narrators would be uhm cool.Or he could find a "hot" singer who is all guts and emotion, like an Amy Ray of the Indigo Girls. I used to LOVE the Indigo Girls but there's one group that has lost my interest. Not because of their performing or voices but because of the songs. But to hear both Indigos with Richard would be fascinating. The other possiblity I was thinking of was a sweet tenor and then I realized I couldn't think of one besides Art Garfunkel. LOL. Well it's early here. Maybe Richard Barone, another underrated singer/writer. Some other possiblities: Tanita Tikaram, Julienne Reagan (of All About Eve), Kristin Barry, Maura O'Connell, Niamh Parsons, Heidi Berry (and where has she diappeared to?), Luka Bloom, Eliza Carty, Iris DeMent (ditto, come back Iris we need you!), Kristen Hersh (I am a HUGE Throwing Muses fan), Mary Fahl (of the late lamented October Project), Marianne Faithfull (hmmm...I know the song too...Marianne's "Ireland" which is just so beautiful and simple), Patty Griffin, Gillian Welch, Janis Ian. As you can see from this partial list, I prefer "bisexual" duets myself. LOLOL. Wonder what that means? Time for coffee perhaps.
