Listening to the music I do I must say that I feel very removed from major labels and pop stars most of the time. Still, it was nice during the late 90s to lose the grunge and hear folky women more. "Hey look! Shawn Colvin is on Suddenly Susan tonight." Yup, those were the days. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 8 Dec 2000 14:52:05 -0500 From: Elwestrand Subject: Re: [RS] Blowing The Lid Off Covers Similarly, I still > scratch > my head over Dar covering "Wilder Than Her" which makes absolutely no > sense > to me and never will. I think Dar covered this song cause it is so much fun! And if you wan't to get technical about it, can't a woman sing it to another woman? And what are you saying? That a woman can't be as wild as a man or feel wilder than her mate? Not all men are firecrackers ya know! I play this song 'cause it is alot of fun to play and sing. Does it need to be anything more? What exactly is a GUY song or a GIRL song for that matter? I mean unless you are singing about your genitals - please don't - what is the restriction? I am glad that Richard is willing to not only sing but write a GIRL song now and then (Mary Magdalen, Reunion Hill). Why is it OK when he does it? I think that what irks me about covers on a Richard album is that even with the covers SNP was a short album. You can put 72 minutes or so of music on a CD, but very few ever come anywhere close to that. I was disappointed by the length of both Dar and Richard's albums. Dar should have put OCG on the regular release of her CD and Richard should have added SBSB on his album and not just on an EP. MY two cents - or was that four? What's too short? Don't you feel as if you got your money's worth on SNP? Just because you can fit 72 minutes on a CD doesn't mean you SHOULD, particularly if -- as the artist -- those "other" songs don't fit with the statement you're trying to make or mood you're trying to establish on a CD. It's like a meal, I guess. Just because you CAN fit more on your plate, doesn't mean you should. Me, I think SNP is a very filling and rich work of art exactly as it is. Just picking up a few pre-1975, I have here, I find: Gordon Lightfoot IF YOU COULD READ ME MIND 37:11 The Byrds GREATEST HITS 39:44 Simon and Garfunkel PARSLEY, SAGE, ROSEMARY, AND THYME 28:12 (!) Note every single song on SNP is longer than every song on PSRT In contrast, Dar's and Richard's albums are 42 and 49 minutes respectively (without special songs). Of course, it's all relative: The Nields' latest album is over an hour long. BTW, speaking of TN. Katryna Nields and Dave Chalfant are expecting their first child. Of course we could diverge into the whole what is art and quantity and quality debate, etc. But my point is I was disappointed that we didn't get more. And by the way I do think that an album, not an EP, clocking in under 40 minutes or so, is too short. Especially for an established artist who can afford the recording process. I mean these people make music for a living, that is their career choice. So make some already. Geesh. And it seems like you agree with me Ron, based on the length of your CD. It is quite long and consistently good. Seems to me your CD (not with me at the moment) is in the 65+minutes range? I know long doesn't equal good, but with Richard I know it would.
