The ending of "May" is not only wonderful in its conception as story, but the vision of the protagonist calling out at the end is one of the most dramatic musical moments I've ever heard (ranking right up there with the end of Procol Harum's "Whaling Stories"). For instance, I was an ABBA fan waaaaayyyyyyy back when everyone thought they were crap (definitive ABBA song: "Fernando." How could you not adore hearing 4 middleaged Swedes singing about teen heartbreak during the Mexican Revolution in transliterated English with an arrangement so sweet it is recommended by 4 out of 5 doctors you have insulin handy when you do?). I have been listening to "Rubber Soul" and "Revolver" much lately. How is the '1' cd? Did the remastering improve the sound of the songs? THAT is definitely on my holiday wish list along with The Beautiful South's "Painting It Red," Joni Mitchell's "Both Sides Now," Kelly Hogan's "Beneath the Country Underdog" and Amy Rigby's "The Sugar Tree." (Amy released one of the best albums of the 90s: "Diary of a Mod Housewife," which has a song that got me through a relationship gone about as wrong as it could: "The Down Side of Love.") By the way, I know it is better to give than to receive, but if anyone wants to send me any of the above cds, I also know how to be EXTREMELY gracious. :) Tom ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 1 Dec 2000 19:57:45 EST From: Tom926@aol.com Subject: [RS] Re: lists liszt lisps (or Liszt lisps lists) Just two other things: Can the lists be compiled and then sent out at the end of the year? I think it would make for a rather handy record guide. For instance, I had never heard of Dave & Tracy before this list, but I will check them out when I am financially solvent again. Also, this lyric has gotten me through some tough times, from probably my favorite song of all time, Richard and Linda Thompson's "Just the Motion": Under the ocean At the bottom of the sea You can't hear the storm It's as peaceful as can be It's just the motion Tom ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 1 Dec 2000 20:51:40 -0500 From: Elwestrand Subject: Re: Re: [RS] Ron's top 5 Well first I was mad at Ron for his lack of affinity for The Green World. But now I am mad at Pat for dismissing Kris Delmhorst. Appetite has been in intense heavy rotation with me since I bought it. I have listened to it more than TGW and SNP. This is not to insinuate that it is better. They are all great. For whatever reason I have listened to it alot. It is a perfect album in total. I would also argue that Kris deals with bigger issues than Pat gives her credit for and that she certainly tangles with issues of self-esteem and self-understanding. Several of her songs deal with her (or her characters) inability to either give or receive love or to make real intimate connections with others. Kris is not Dar. Dar is one in a million. But Kris is truly gifted in her own right and I eagerly await both her newly released live album and new album expected sometime in '01. The new songs I heard her do live recently were great. I wish that on this list people would respond with positives. If someone doesn't like Dar's album fine. By why respond by going after an artist that they do like. And what is up with comparing people like Richard and Dar? They are sooooo different. Why do we need one to be better than another? It is like saying Golden Retrievers are better looking dogs than German Sheppards. You can say it, but what exactly have you accomplished except to upset the Sheppard owners. I have certainly been guilty of engaging in this type of behavior in the past, but I don't intend to do it anymore. There just aren't that many things in life that we can form precious bonds to like music. I think we should treat each others favorite things with more care. Well I will be off the web for a few days so if you respond to me I won't be able to respond to you. But, I will when I can. Richard has a quite a way with using of double and triple meanings. "Did he who made the lamb Put the tremble in the hand That reaches out to take my quarter? I look him in the eye But there isn't time Just time enough to pass the tender The highway takes it's toll" Norman ------------------------------ End of shindell-list-digest V2 #353 ***********************************
