So far, by my count, Richard had recorded, in addition to the Cry3 CD, seven covers (Fly on a Plane, Paddy's Green Shamrock Shore, Darkness Darkness, I'll Be Here In The Morning, Sing Me Back Home, My Love Will Follow You, and Calling The Moon.) I would imagine there might be a couple I'm not aware of, and I would appreciate any info on them. In any case, I thought it might be interesting to find out what songs you all would like to hear Richard cover. My own choice is 'Duncan' from Paul Simon's first solo CD. What do you think? "Duncan" has always been a favorite song of mine, and has the distinction of being the first song I performed at my very first gig, way back in college in 1977. I can really hear Richard "becoming" Lincoln Duncan, just as he does so well with Eliza, William Taylor, Mary Magdalene and the others. There are, of course, a bunch of songs that Richard has covered, but never recorded, such as: "Love Hurts" "Sin City" "Hickory Wind" "Making Plans" "Friend of the Devil" "Once in a Very Blue Moon" "I Got Mine" "Sittin' on Top of the World" "Louisiana" "Sonora's Death Row" He sure knows how to pick 'em. That song could easily be a "Shindell" song. >> I was probably as big a Croce fan in 1974 as I am a Shindell fan today. I think, despite the obvious differences in appearance, demeanor, and specific subject matter, they both had a pretty keen eye on people, and could really write a song that cuts to the essence of a personality. Once you got past the barroom brawlers like 'You Don't Mess Around With Jim' and 'Leroy Brown' Croce had a lot of quiet, revealing, and insightful songs, like 'Box #10' and 'Age.' I like the choice of 'Operator,' but the Croce song I'd most like to hear Richard sing is 'Salon and Saloon.' That's another one that would fit right into the Shindell catalog. But I've seen it as a potential Dar cover. I also would love to hear Dar cover, as someone on Dar-list mentioned, "Rainy Days and Mondays". What would I like to hear Richard cover? "For a Dancer" -- Jackson Browne (yes, I know it was just covered.. that shouldn't stop Richard) "Fire and Rain" -- James Taylor "Carolina in my Mind" -- again JT "Better Place to Be" -- Harry Chapin (and am sure there are other HC songs that Richard should cover) Norman ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 24 Nov 2000 21:29:22 EST From: Rongrittz@aol.com Subject: [RS] Re: Cover Songs << I like the choice of 'Operator,' but the Croce song I'd most like to hear Richard sing is 'Salon and Saloon.' His friend and lead guitar player, Maury Muehleisen, who also died in the plane crash that killed Croce, wrote that one. But I agree with Gene . . . Jim Croce was (along with Harry Chapin) sort of the Shindell of his time. Storyteller. Observer of the common man. Hard to believe he was only 30 when he died.
