The first song I ever heard by Richard and actually it was live was "The Next Best Western". What a great song and a great intro. I was lucky enough to be attending an Indigo Girls concert (stick with me here...) Joan Baez was schedulled to play in town the next night. Joan showed up at the IG concert with Richard in tow. She played some numbers with the 'Girls and then introduced Richard who wow'ed the crowd with TNBW. I was also lucky enough to attend the Joan Baez concert the next night were Richard repeated the performance and was featured even a little bit more. What a time... I'd go back in a second. brian. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 22 Nov 2000 10:00:09 -0500 From: "Michaela O'Brien" Subject: [RS] Richard on NPR this weekend Hi all, An interview Richard taped with host Lisa Simeone is scheduled to air this weekend - though they have not specified which day (Sat or Sun) - on WEEKEND ALL THINGS CONSIDERED. You're right, RG, exactly right. "Are You Happy" and "Lazy" are trick songs. They instantly trick strangers into listening more closely, because humor is a great ice breaker. Then we get to listening more intently, and we soon get to the heart of the matter. We listen closely and find out there's a whole universe inside the wardrobe there, to borrow from Lewis, or inside the wall on the 7 1/2th floor, to borrow from Malkovich.. - -lee ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 22 Nov 2000 14:45:40 EST From: Rongrittz@aol.com Subject: Re: [RS] shindell 101 >> You're right, RG, exactly right. Like "Ooh, cool, zippy folksinger!" Not. I heard "Castaway" ... and "Courier" ... and "Sparrows Point" ... and "Fleur-de-Lis" ... and on and on through the knee-slapping "By Now," and all I could think is "My God, get this guy some Prozac. And a handful for me while you're at it." It's the first time I'd heard Richard, believe it or not! I heard it playing on our community radio station. It's odd because now I wouldn't say it's especially one of my favorites (although I like it lots!), but it definitely hooked me when I heard it. I went right out and got SNP, and after hearing IT, I went out and bought everything else, and I'm very happy now. :-) SMOKEY ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 22 Nov 2000 17:28:11 -0500 (EST) From: Katie Mahoney Subject: [RS] Joooooooaaaaaannnnnniiiiiiiiiiiiiiieeeeeeeee Okay, I wasn't going to say anything, but I couldn't resist Katrin's plea for help. So here are Katie's Don't-You-Dis-Joan-On-MY-List two cents: I love Joan Baez. I love her for *being* Joan Baez, so that whether or not she records a wonderful song ("The Cherry Tree Carol") or a ridiculous and annoying song ("Children and All That Jazz") or a cover that I like better than the original ("Fishing") or a cover that I think the original is far superior to ("If I Wrote You"), my opinion of her remains unchanged. I adore her music, but it's not because I am blown away by her guitar skills, and it's not because I think she has the most beautiful voice I've ever heard (although she does have a lovely voice, and I really like the way it's matured). I adore her music because of who she *is*. For me, all of the songs she does are infused with a Joan-Baez-ness that makes them wonderful. Even if I do prefer Dar's versions of her own songs, that's not the point. The point is that I love Joan Baez for being Joan Baez. As for RS albums, SNP is my favorite for the same reason that Tanglewood Tree is my favorite Dave & Tracy album: I just feel like it's an overall better *album*. "When I Go," "Kate and the Ghost of Lost Love," and "The River Where She Sleeps" are three of my favorite Dave & Tracy songs EVER, and I'm not sure if any of the songs off TT touch my heart in quite the same way as those three, but I'd still pick TT as my favorite album. Likewise, there are songs off Richard's earlier albums - such as the title track from each of the three - that I *adore* . . . but I'd still go with SNP as my favorite album. Ah, Joan and Dave and Tracy. How satisfying it is to work all three of you into a post and still have it be on-topic. Ciao! So I have this image of Ron wearing a dirty trench coat, a walkman, queued up to AYHN, stuffed into an inside pocket, hanging around a schoolyard saying, "Psst! Hey kid! Try this...first one's free." - -Howie (not thinking of Tom Lehrer) - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- "Academic training was instrumental.
