Only my second and third times to see him live. Jess Klein opened both shows. Wed - Cactus Cafe (Austin) - There was a smallish crowd - probably only 50 or so. Everyone was *very* subdued, probably election hangover. Richard also seemed to take his cues from the crowd, and didn't say much. Confession - his 3-yr old's favorite song, since it's about a duck :-) Old Hobo Mary Magdelene Summer Wind Wysteria (he does play this with a flatpick - amazing. Sure sounds like fingerpicking on the record). Broke a string retuning for the next song and told an acordian joke. Fishing Abuelita Lazy You Stay Here Are You Happy Now Fluer-de-Lis Shades of Gray Cold Missouri Waters By Now - an audience request. Said he hadn't played it in years. But the request "intrigued him". He played around for a minute or so trying to remember the chords, and then stared at the ceiling for a minute to remember the words, and then played it flawlessly. Transit Encore - Sing Me Back (Merle Haggard) Thurs - Mucky Duck (Houston) - A very different atmosphere. Standing room only, probably 150 in attendence. Crowd was very energized, as Duck crowds can be. Richard was very chatty and had a lot of interactions and verbal sparring with the audience. Confession Old Hobo Next Best Western Wysteria Summer Wind Mary Magdelene Arrowhead Reunion Hill Fishing Abuelita Cold Missouri Waters Lazy Are You Happy Now Shades of Gray You Stay Here Transit Encore - Calling the Moon He did have his CFox. The airlines did lose it. He admitted to saying at a previous show that he didn't like it, but said emphatically that it was only a joke. All in all, a wonderful two nights. Inerestingly, he *opened* with the song, nailed it, then looked down at his guitar (actually *my* guitar), grimaced, and said "I have no idea why I played that song. I *never* play that song. Hell, *I* wrote it and it creeps *me* out." Scariest song I'VE ever heard, that's for sure. BTW, I saw Kate Rusby last night at Makor. Y'all think *Dar* is funny? I'm *still* laughing at some of Kate's stage patter. Defintely catch her if you can. Shatneresque, and terrifying.... Seriously, I have to agree. Also, as creepy as the body of 'By Now' is, the minute-and-a-half instrumental after the last verse really gets to me. It gives the listener plenty of time to imagine just what exactly is happening in that car. The music sort of deconstructs itself as it goes along, and if you're listening to it while alone in your car it will make you take a glance over your shoulder...just in case. That song is creepy, creepy, creepy, and it scares the bejeezus out of me. Hey, Gene--if Richard's doing "By Now," and he did "Fleur-de-Lis" at Falcon Ridge, who knows what could be next? Nice "weather" in New Jersey. But then, who cares about the "weather"? :-) Peace, Love, and Mischief, Vanessa P.S. Sign outside church on Halloween read: "Read the Bible. For me, it's the lines like "How far do you go?" (yeah, right, he's talking about distance) and "What time are you expected?" (meaning "How long until they start looking for the body?") that have always absolutely scared the crap out of me. I've recently started performing "By Now" as a medley with "Ascent," if only so I can talk myself into believing that the guy eventually gets caught. I think I'm sleeping with the lights on tonight.
