I agree with Ed. I've never viewed the song as being literally about Halloween. That would be too simple. Or maybe I just like reading into things. :-) SMOKEY ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 30 Oct 2000 17:11:05 -0500 From: Jeff Gilson Subject: RE: [RS] SOTW: Are You Happy Now? Subject: [RS] Gray & Red I _love_ the whole camera verse -- it's just so masterful... at least how_I_ interpret it; which is so deliciously ambiguous - does "where we played roles in black and white" mean that the narrator and his ex used to take somewhat kinky photos of each other... or does the line mean that the bed is the place where they had the fight in which they broke up? "I set the timer, thought of you/I put the lens up to my head" (a wonderful faux-suicide gesture, no?) "I took a photgraph for you/What comes out gray is really red" (oh! brilliant! brilliant! Is the camera pointed AT his head or away from it - i.e. did he just sight the composition in the viewfinder?). I read this as the narrator saying, "I am so incredibly angry at you. I am sending you this photograph to give you some indication of how I feel inside, but it can't convey even one-twentieth of what I'm feeling." And I sit there and wonder if it the photo is of: a) a bureau, part of a window and a powerline outside, b) him making a really rude face or c) a blur of scalp, ear and neck? I love that he doesn't tell us. I also really love Hugh Blumenfeld's "answer" song, "I'm So Happy Now" - written from the girlfriend's point of view - where he sings "and that blurry photo that you sent/I wondered what the hell it meant." About every fifth time I hear this song, I rediscover it anew and fall to my knees before Mr. Shindell, genuflecting (I don't waive my commissions, however. I do have my limits). - -- Mr. Hunter ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 30 Oct 2000 15:34:29 -0800 From: "Clary, John (CLRY)" Subject: RE: [RS] Gray & Red Charlie wrote: >> I also really love Hugh Blumenfeld's "answer" song, "I'm So Happy Now" - written from the girlfriend's point of view - where he sings "and that blurry photo that you sent/I wondered what the hell it meant." << Is this recorded? Not that Pat's, Norman's, Ed's, John's, E's, Lisa's, Gene's, Vanessa's, RonD's, Charlie's and everyone else's faces aren't great, but it's swell to get new blood here from time to time. We hope to hear more from you guys. Hope to hear from some other new folks, too . . . I've always taken it to be pretty straight forward. It's not my favorite Richard song, but I like it (alright, that's a stupid remark, there is hardly a Richard song I don't like) but I think I might have overdosed on it. The end if my favorite part - you've always wondered.... so I dedicade this one to you. Is that on any of Hugh's albums? Which one if so? Don't tell me it's a hidden track on one of those I actually have and I didn't discover it until now....???? ah, work is calling, way too late already....
