Subject: [RS] Way off topic Sorry about this post, but I'm not on the dar-list... In the song "We learned the Sea" it sounds as if Dar sings "We've reached the strait even I could not go through," but the lyrics say "We've reached the place even I could not go through." Did anyone notice this? Is this one of the "packaging problems" they had with the original release? It just seems odd that they'd get it wrong when the music was recorded before the media was printed. - -----Original Message----- From: Michael Devlin [mailto:thefolks@mmreview.com] Sent: Friday, October 20, 2000 12:07 AM To: shindell-list@smoe.org Subject: [RS] Vance Gilbert Chat - Prize I think Richard's fans would be interested in knowing that the Music Matters Review is holding a web-chat with Vance Gilbert on Sunday October 29th at 8:00PM. KATHRYN WILLIAMS!!!! *phew* About her first album, "Dog Leap Stairs", Amazon says: "Tagged the New Beth Orton Or New Drake, this Album is a Collection of Haunting, Melodic Folk." About her second album, "Little Black Numbers", one Amazon customer wrote: "I first was made aware of Kathryn Williams in an article in Billboard which described her current success in England, and described her as a strong new singer songwriter in the folk/rock genre. Ms. Williams is truly a great new talent, and listening to her disc reminds me of the first time I heard Lori Carson's amazing debut Shelter. The lyrics beautiful with soothing melodies. Ms. Williams voice, style and phrasing allowing true emotion to seep through. Each song a story onto itself. I strongly recommend this disc to anyone who enjoys the music of Lori Carson, Dar Willams, or Patty Griffin." So, I'll let you guys know what I think! Kerry, OK, sorry Kerry....just read my lists for the first time in a couple of days....HELP IS AT HAND! I *think* you might mean Kathryn Williams. She IS an up-and-coming Brit singer/songwriter from Liverpool, has just been nominated for a Mercury award (as were Kate Rusby and Eliza Carthy before her) and she has REALLY curly hair. Almost as curly as Ms. Rusby's, but not quite. Could it be her? Yours helpfully (although there's every possibility I could be wrong), Buffy xxx P.S. Paul says if it's right, he helped me identify her and if it's wrong, he didn't. ;)) ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 20 Oct 2000 15:35:28 EDT From: Gf212121@aol.com Subject: [RS] Re: Guessing Game Hey you guys, I've never heard the 'year in bed' story, but I think "Here with Me' by Dido features one of the most incredible vocals I have ever heard. I'm a sucker for this type of vocalist in general, but Dido and Beth Orton are the best of the bunch, for my money. My knowledge of music theory and terminology is virtually non-existent. That said, the bridge, I think it's called (between the end of the first chorus and the beginning of the next verse) on 'Here With Me' reminds me a lot of 'You Stay Here' in its undulating, roller-coaster pattern. Call me crazy, but I definitely hear it. By the way, just 105 days until Richard's live performance of 'The Weather' at the Outpost in the Burbs in New Jersey. Make sure you're there for this historic event. It will be a co-bill with Lucy. Ron G. assures me this is a great place to see a show. I've never been there, but will have by then (for Eddie From Ohio on 11/10) Gene F. This isn't all too uncommon. With regard to the "packaging problems", they were plenty and varied -- some came with rivets (the binding) that popped upon opening; the alignment of the vellum pages and the paper pages were less than perfect; one of the pages was upside down. If this is what they had in mind when they conceived the idea to produce it, they didn't have very high standards. That said, while I don't feel that it is a particularly "special" limited edition, the inclusion of "O Canada Girls" makes the investment worthwhile for me -- I think it's one of Dar's best songs. The LE is really beautiful. Although execution of it was a little sketchy I do think it is "special." I totally agree that OCG's is an amazing song and ironically I think it is the "best" on the CD, which is of course not really on the CD. When I saw Dar recently I had her sign my LE on that song. She also played it solo accoustic at an in-store, and made me cry in front of God and everyone. Of course maybe that's where I should be crying, "but way back where I come from we never mean to bother, we never make our passions other people's concern." :-) E ________________________________________________ Get your own "800" number - Free Free voicemail, fax, email, and a lot more http://www.ureach.com/reg/tag ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 20 Oct 2000 17:42:38 -0400 From: "Norman A. Johnson" Subject: [RS] Lyrics and credits Ed: <> There's a couple of other differences between what Dar sings and the printed lyrics on TGW. Same is true with THE HONESTY ROOM. In "Traveling again", she sings "someday will I sing the mountains..." where the printed lyrics replace "landscape" for "mountains" (I like mountains better). There's also a difference in the third verse of "When I was a Boy": "and I could always cry" (sung) vs. "and I could cry all the time" (printed). To bring this back to Richard--In the first printing of SOMEWHERE NEAR PATERSON, Richard is given credit for vocals on "Merritt parkway" but not for "Wisteria". I don't recall any differences in the printed vs. sung lyrics. Norman ------------------------------ End of shindell-list-digest V2 #300 ***********************************
