Maybe it *does* explain Christianity after all, or at least people's adherence to it. << I can understand how a child will get sucked in (like I was), but what confounds me is that adults have these life-changing conversion experiences. I fear I may be treading very near offending the Christians on this list. I know Richard has his issues with the Episcopalians and other organized Christian denominations and sometimes writes songs from this perspective, but his fans don't have to agree with him to appreciate the songs. I don't want to suggest that religion is bad for any of you, just that it doesn't work for me anymore. So, I'll sit on my fingers for a while and let the digesters catch up. j a c ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 27 Sep 2000 17:44:14 -0400 From: Elwestrand Subject: Re: RE: [RS] SOTW ________________________________________________ Get your own "800" number - Free Free voicemail, fax, email, and a lot more http://www.ureach.com/reg/tag - ---- On Wed, 27 Sep 2000, Clary, John (CLRY@chevron.com) wrote: > >> We have no evidence to assume that Sister Maria wouldn't be equally > forgiving of the motorists as she is of the prisoners. Go ahead disagree with me - you know I love a good debate, but don't misinform the list that I'm an ex-catholic. That was not my upbringing. And yes I do understand the concept that you must ask for forgiveness, but I think if Sister Maria knew about the tradgedy of the drowning republicans she would have at least offered a prayer for them. Wow, so on the Dar-list we are dangerously close to the gay/straight discussion, and over here we're going to take on Christianity? Boy I better set aside some time to read! The NJ Turnpike, which is technically I-95 in New Jersey, splits off onto Route 80 West just a few miles on the Jersey side of the George Washington Bridge, Somewhere Near Teaneck. It's a helluva horrible merge, by the way, and you'd best approach it with your eyes shut. 80 West goes straight through New Jersey, and crosses the Delaware Water Gap in-between Mount Minsi and Mount Tammany. The Delaware Water Gap, BTW, is nowhere near Delaware. Go figure. Thanks for some interesting reading! I have been reading the archives so I hope this isn't too old but someone mentioned Richard watching the sign language interpretor and wondered what she did when "flipping the bird" came up. I was watching too and she did put her middle finger up but used her other hand to sort of underline it and wave it around, to express the many "bird" signs that Richard suggests! Obviously the man has traveled on the Long Island Expressway aka the longest parking lot! Janet __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! How I remember just wishing there was somebody else to worry over them with me! And thinking how *perfect* would Richard's music be for a mailing list, how his songs would be an endless source for discussion and analysis. And how amazing to have these songs that even raise the issues of philosophy/theology, grace, sin, whether any of it means anything. I feel quite misty-eyed that we now have this list! Thanks, Sally! lisa PS the reason we're trying to compile our "Rules" is that we've been so completely hopeless about having any or obeying any of them! ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 27 Sep 2000 22:27:48 -0400 From: Howie Subject: [RS] Re: From Renee-"The Cross Bearer" At 04:03 PM 9/27/2000 -0400, Lisa wrote: My kids and I are working on a compilation of Household Rules. One of them I don't know how to say any better than "don't assume a bad thing." In some contexts this means "don't take offense." In others "don't assume someone did something annoying (etc) *on purpose* unless all other possibilities have been exhausted." One version I know may a bit high-falutin' for kids, but it goes, "Never ascribe to malice what can be more easily explained by ignorance." What it means is that when you feel someone has done you wrong, it may be more likely that they didn't know something that you do, rather than doing it to hurt you. It's something I try to live by, and I even get to practice doing it many times each day! (I'd call that a blessing, but that's another list!)
