However, I have also seen people use a pick *and* use the remaining available fingers to add higher-end notes to the melody. I can't recall whether or not Richard does this, as I, too, get caught up in watching the left hand a bit. >> I'm pretty sure Richard plays "Wisteria" in this odd way. Whether it's called "Chickenpicking" or not, I cannot say, but I HAVE also seen Lucika Plansky employ this flatpick/fingerpick hybrid style fairly often. ONe of Long Island's best pickers, Bob Westcott, does this alot too and it drives me crazy when I see him do it. RonG is right in calling us mere mortals, at least in the shadows of these great musicians. And I'm almost positive that "Kate and the Ghost of Lost Love" will be on Dave and Tracy's set list this Thursday evening at the Bottom Line. They did it twice at Falcon Ridge, and twice I was mesmerized to the point where I left the planet briefly. Maybe someone should bring along some spare oxygen for RonG, or some Amylnitrate. This should be a truly outstanding evening...I only hope they give Dave & Tracy enough time on stage. I'm worried that with the addition of Jess Klein (who I don't care for) on the bill we might not get enough of the dynamic duo. That would be a crime. Richard looked relaxed and was backed up by John Putnam on guitar with Lincoln on bass.......so perhaps they will both be with him at the Bottom Line also........anyone in the NY area who has not checked out this space, please do, it's a wonderful place to see a concert. (friendsofmusic.net......that is my little plug for today.) Sang all our faves (in no particular order): Wisteria, Abuelita, Confession, Reunion Hill, Next Best Western, Mary Magdalen, Fishing, Are You Happy Now, The Kenworth of My Dreams, Transit, with a Merle Haggard tune thrown in and a few others that are escaping my memory..........Paul is a better man than I as far as a setlist goes, and since he was in attendance I will count on him to give you all a far and away better list.......... Beth Amsel opened with four songs, one an a cappella rendition of an old Lutheran song set to new words, she had a beautiful crystal clear voice, and I would highly recommend her to you. She dedicated her performance to a state trooper who had stopped her for speeding on the Northway, but who took pity on her and let her go, after restarting her car for her, LOL. Maybe I'll see some of you in Mahwah next Friday.......... ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 11 Sep 2000 09:09:56 -0400 From: "Dupas, Edward (E.M.)" Subject: RE: [RS] Tin Angel Tonight <> I realized these things at his last show and was shocked. When I tabbed "You Stay Here" and "Wisteria" I learned them both as fingerstyle songs. When I saw the former played with a pick I was surprised, because it is tricky to flat pick that number, but when I saw the latter performed with a pick I was nearly under my seat unconscious. I still play "Wisteria" fingerstyle, I always will. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 11 Sep 2000 09:18:54 -0400 From: "Dupas, Edward (E.M.)" Subject: RE: [RS] Wisteria and such... <> I'm vexed...the tab I did was in DADGAD and listed no CAPO placement specifically (although I play 4th and Richard in the 5th (I think)). Rockin' Ron, are you sure there isn't a third interpretation of the music floating out there somewhere, 'cause I checked RG's page and he learned it in DADGAD as well? ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 11 Sep 2000 09:22:15 -0400 From: "Dupas, Edward (E.M.)" Subject: RE: [RS] Wisteria and such... <> I have tried to play this song with a pick (for like 15 seconds) and found myself using those remaining fingers as you say. I thought that it would be perfectly possible to play it that way, but I don't recall Richard using any other fingers. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 11 Sep 2000 09:50:58 EDT From: "Sally Green" Subject: [RS] posts Hi all - RonG summed up my feelings exactly on the rather unfortunate (in my opinion) parody "Balling the Goon." I also thought it was in bad taste, and because of it I have looked into what moderation options are available to the shindell-list. From what I can tell, it's not possible to "restrict" one person, although I know that Mark Ferguson and Tom Neff used to do so on the Dar list. That makes me uncomfortable anyway, because we are not censors here and I think neither RonG nor I want to get into the business of approving posts or deciding who gets a red flag (that really used to make me mad on the Dar list - both I and the venerable Kerry Bernard were at one time or another on the Dar-red flag-list, and you all know how great we two are). :) I look at the shindell-list as belonging to everybody, and RonG and I just perform the necessary administrative functions that keep the list up and running. So just like a commune, I think that it's best for all of us who are on the list to decide what we think is appropriate and what kind of posts we want to see on the list. And the best way to do THAT is to post the kinds of posts that we want to see and read. When something offensive or "unfortunate" gets posted, the best way to react, in my opinion, is pretty much how we all DID react: we ignored it. Of course if things get out of hand, with rampant salacious posts, profanity everywhere, e-mail chain letters about the Neiman-Marcus cookie recipe, and offers of $1000 from Bill Gates, then moderating the list might become an option. But I don't think it will come to that. Now, for one, I'm looking forward to the SOTW! - --Sally sallyagreen@hotmail.com Co-list admin (with RonG) P.S. RS is coming to the Ram's Head in Annapolis, MD this Wednesday, and that day is also my girlfriend's birthday party with her family and wee little nieces, so I will not be able to see him in my own backyard. The incredible Dave Carter & Tracy Grammer will be opening, and Richard's playing with a full band (including Larry Campbell, I'm hoping), so these shows are not to be missed. If anybody needs one, let me know.<< Someone PLEASE use these tickets. I had a financial crisis and can't fly out for this one. There is especially powerful and good karma attached to these tickets. It will be an exciting CFox fest in addition to the great talent and music. I would be sad to find out that no one went in my stead. Besides Ron may need someone there to help him if he is overcome with emotion. j a c ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 11 Sep 2000 07:38:25 -0700 From: "Clary, John (CLRY)" Subject: RE: [RS] Richard's guitarwork Dave added: >> I saw Richard doing this when he was in Chicago last May. I think it's called "Chickenpicking," although I don't know why. He's amazing at it.<< Dave and I talked about chicken-pickin' a while back. I do something similar with a flat pick, my loose fingers and sometimes my thumb, but I still can't get all the notes Richards does when doing Wisteria in DADGAD. I've considered doing it Garcia style, but I'm afraid of pain. What key is Ed Dupas' 7th fret version in? I first learned it in Em, no capo, in standard. In July Richard played this with a pick twice or thrice that I remember, but on the night he also did Reunion Hill (slow version) he played it with his fingers only. RH is incredible this way, btw. j a c ------------------------------ End of shindell-list-digest V2 #249 ***********************************
