I can play it quite well, sounds just like Richard (unfortunately the voice doesnt cooperate), but I must pick it with 4 fingers to make sure I find the correct notes. Richard, on the other hand, uses a flat pick with ease, finding all the notes with no problem.>> Interestingly, if you play this song in the DADGAD tuning and follow the chord structure as given to us by RonG, the song simply MUST be finger picked. But if you Capo at 7 and use the chord sturcture in standard tuning provided to us by Ed Dupas, flat picking the song is fairly easy, although to get it to sound closer to Richard's version, there's a bit of hammering and pull-offs necessary at various junctures of the song. I'm finding it hugely difficult to master in DADGAD and have just about given up trying to get it to sound right. Ed's version, on the other hand, sounds pretty neat, though I find it hard to sing in this key, especially the chorus. As for the Lister who asked if Richard had a brother, he does indeed and he looks EXACTLY like Richard (IMO) although he is prematurely grey. I also met Richard's father when Richard played at our Folk Society concert series and Richard looks alot like his Dad as well--not nearly as tall. He *does* play it in DADGAD, and he *does* use a flatpick, and he somehow *does* manage to make it sound like he's fingerpicking. It ain't fair, I tell ya, it just ain't fair. Anyway, I'm disappointed that Larry Campbell won't be performing with Richard on Thursday, but I'm so excited to see Dave Carter & Tracy Grammer that I can barely stand it. If they do "Kate and the Ghost of Lost Love" (the Most Perfect Song Ever Written -- see my transcription page for a fuller explanation of why), they'll probably have to carry me out of the Bottom Line in one of three ways: a) on a stretcher, or b) in a straight-jacket, or c) both.
