Cause that moment when you are pretty sure you're going to die, is not a pretty moment. And the earth is powerful beyond our capacity to possibly understand. >> I know it's minor, comparitively speaking, and probably won't even raise an eyebrow to you Left Coasters, but I experienced an earthquake in Acapulco while on my honeymoon in 1981 (no comments from the peanut gallery, ok?) and couldn't believe the earth could MOVE like that. But it was in New Orleans in the mid-60's -- when Hurricanes Hilda, Betsy and Hanna ripped through the South -- that I first appreciated the power that E's talking about. Among other sights that will stay with me forever, I recall watching the walls to my neighbor's house give way, and the roof crashing down to the ground. They'd just finished building it the week before. "This ain't no way to live" indeed. I guess the only good thing about it, in retrospect, was that we lost all power for a week, so there was really nothing to do at night. So, by kerosene lamp, I picked up my Dad's guitar and taught myself to play. Silver lining, I guess. So while our protagonist sits in his front yard, waiting for the storm, I'm reminded of the last verse from Jackson Browne's "The Road and the Sky" . . . Can you see those dark clouds gathering up ahead? They're gonna wash this planet clean like the Bible said Now you can hold on steady and try to be ready But everybody's gonna get wet Don't think it won't happen just because it hasn't happened yet . . . Deb - -- RICHARD SHINDELL: (Goodbye anonymity) The cover of his latest album, the hauntingly beautiful "Somewhere Near Paterson" on Signature Sounds Records, features a photo of Richard Shindell looking away into the shrouded distance, his back to the camera. Shindell ascribes the cover's anonymity to a profound dislike of having his picture taken, but we'd prefer to find the deeper meaning. The man The New York Times describes as America's best singer-songwriter would rather let his extraordinary songs do the talking. "Paterson" is Shindell's fourth solo album. He, along with Dar Williams and Lucy Kaplansky, also belonged to Cry Cry Cry, a folk supergroup that lived up to its name in terms of quality and ticket sales. But even after cracking Pollstar's Top 50 concert tours in 1998, the group decided to disband in order to focus on their own careers. Good move. "Paterson" is Shindell's most accomplished work to date, his bittersweet tenor and complex narratives revealing modern-day emotional bankruptcy and distress. Tormented stockbrokers, road warriors in minivans and transcendent nuns changing flats on the New Jersey turnpike are just a few of the memorable characters, their lives told with telling and empathetic detail. This is the voice of a master. www.richardshindall.com) (sic) - - Glenn Whipp __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo!
