It is not positive or helpful to the artists involved. If you really think Dar's gone Hollywood, don't buy her CD. Those closest to the trio who have been around them of late have universally sensed some sort of rift. No one knows what it is about or if it is even true, but there is a subtle yet discernible disconnect--it was apparent at Falcon Ridge. Whatever the situation, obviously it's none of our business. Unless you're a music journalist and sniff a story somewhere. A fire that should definitely not be fanned is this sell-out commercialism bunk. The record is superb, albeit a bit of a departure from her previous work. But commercialism doesn't come into play in my opinion--it's just more eclectic, musically, with less reliance on solo acoustic guitar. Some of the songs, like "Spring Street" and "After All" virtually come alive like never before with their new arrangements. I'm loving every minute of every track. In many ways it's a pivotally important album in that Dar once again redefines the genre of folk and forges a new and highly original direction for singer/songwriters to traffic in for the future. Dar fans will adore this record in time, if not from the start, if they keep their minds open to new ideas. Subject: [RS] Denmark Smells Fine Dear Listers - The human mind likes to see patterns in things, but - unless Dar and Richard are very cleverly hiding things from me, which is not how they've behaved so far in my life - I'm afraid there ain't no there there.I would posit that Richard encored with "Sin City" because he was already onstage with Larry, Lincoln and Denny and they were planning to play "Sin City." They haven't rehearsed "CTM", so, if he were to have played "CTM", L, L &D would have had to have just sat there, which might have made them feel silly. RS had to travel in a van withh them to Newport the next day. I doubt if he wanted to make them sullen and unhappy. Of course, he could have then played "CTM" _after_ "Sin City" at the Iron Horse, but that is sort of a backwards-twist of the encore tradition -- the usual thing if you do a double-encore is to return to the stage solo, and do one song, then invite the band back for some old classic. Arguing against the double-encore idea, RS was very tired after the fierce cat/ dove hunter/ wavering lights/ all-radios-at-once/ snoring flight, and they had to get up at 6:30 the next morning to get to Newport, so I doubt if Richard ever even for a moment considered doing a double encore. Of course, maybe I'm wrong, and it would probably be _great_ for publicity to get a real hot rumor going of a BIG HONKING FIGHT between Dar and Richard. Kind of a NATIONAL STAR type-thing. Imagine the headlines: "'It's all over between us,' sobs Williams!" "Shindell heard harmonizing with Boston housewife!"* "'I never dreamed it would come to this - I literally feel torn apart!' cries Kaplansky." It'd be awesome. - -- Charlie *he sings a harmony on Lori McKenna's new project. PS: Don't say we don't come through... we've put Dave Carter & Tracy Grammar on as the support act for RS at the Bottom Line in NYC on Thur. 14 Sept. PPS: If there are any railfans on the list, I have a short piece in this months TRAINS magazine. So there. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 09 Aug 2000 19:11:18 -0400 From: "Norman A. But that was in '97, shortly after EOTS came out. This album is more melodic (is that a word?) and relies less (if it does at all) on drum loops than EOTS. I think ecletic is a good word to describe it. But I think that's true of all of her albums. Listen to the THR. Guitars, Drums, Cellos, Roland R8 synthesizer, violins, violas, and a Fisher's price xylophone. I think there are a parts of TGW that are overdone (the start of "Spring Street" sounds like a bombastic TV theme song) but on the whole, it is an exceptional album. "After All", in particular, is a truly remarkable song, and I feel it is *better* than anything she had done before. Richard and Dar's versions of "Calling the Moon" are so different that they are almost different songs. I like both, and wish I could hear Richard do it live once. Well, that pretty much sums up my entire post. Fred, could you please email me? I sent out a Retail Angels letter, and for some reason yours bounced back. Okay, sorry I don't have anything more interesting to write. Well, I could add something - but consider yourself warned, it's full of Dave and Tracy content. However, you'll be pleased to note that, unlike my earlier posts, there's Richard content as well :-) It's very strange, but in the song "The Mountain" on Tanglewood Tree, I think Dave's backup vocals sound EXACTLY like Richard. Even knowing that it's Dave, I sometimes have to remind myself that it's not Richard, because my first instinct is to assume it's him. I can't imagine anyone but D & T singing their songs . . . but if anyone *was* to cover "The Mountain," I think Richard would sound great on backup. Anyone else have this reaction? My mother is in the living room right now, playing my grandmother her favorite songs from When I Go. Three generations of Dave-and-Tracy-lovers . . . you gotta love it. Ciao!
