Now I need a medical excuse sufficient to allow me to go home early to play them. However, said medical condition must allow me (a) to cycle home in mid-90s temps (my biking addiction won't allow otherwise) and (b) to return to work tomorrow hale and hearty. Any thoughts?<< How 'bout a clergy excuse? I'm ordained by the ULC and while this really was done only so that I could perform my sister's wedding legally (OK, and so I couldn't hack seminary), it could also allow me to summon you for a special ceremonial holy day. That would not require you to be ill. =) Enjoy your new music, the ceremony begins as soon as you get home. Liberal use of candles & incense is recommended. Start with SNP, track one, so you get the full religious penance part out of the way. Little blue pills not required... I certainly was not saying Tracy is the only one. >What about Emily and Amy? First off, I don't think any of the aforementioned women "sold out" - people seem to think that making money doing what you're good at and what you love equals selling out, which is just plain stupid. To me, you sell out when you compromise your artistic integrity to MAKE money - none of those women have done that. They're all exceptionally talented musicians who worked their buns off to get where they are. If they're making money at it (after what I'm sure was a good long time making NOTHING), more power to them. On a semi-related (and bizarrely well-timed) note, I have to share a truly hilarious moment from this morning... deciding to be Ms. Organization, my "other" boss (ie. the one you guys probably don't know as well as Charlie), Carol Young, was sitting on her floor, digging through piles and piles of old paperwork (some from her days working at The Iron Horse in the 80's). She let out a howl of laughter when she came upon 2 things. Scurrying into my office, she said, "You have to read this" and, covering up the signature, showed me a neatly hand-written letter, on yellow legal paper, from someone saying something along the lines of, "I've just finished college, I play acoustic guitar, I'm just getting into the music business, and I'm interested in opening for someone at The Iron Horse..." She then moved her hand so I could see the signature. "Sincerely, Tracy Chapman." The other was also a hand-written note along with a little press kit (and some bad photos), circa 1987, that said, "We are an all-original acoustic duo from Atlanta. We are playing in New York on the 3rd of December and will be in Boston on the 4th/5th. We would love to play a show or do an opening either day. I hope you can help us. Thanks - Amy Ray." And under Amy's signature is her home phone number. HA! They all had to start somewhere, eh? (Hey, I am a seminary wash-out too . . . ) > Enjoy your new music, the ceremony begins as soon as you get home. Liberal > use of candles & incense is recommended. That's funny. I just replenished the sandalwood incense supply last night. Eerie how this is all working out. I was wondering if anyone here caught him playing Sunday at the Workshop stage around 11:30-12:30? He sang a song that had a line about a nun changing a flat tire on her way to a prison for church. Any ideas what song this is or where I could get a copy of it? In the "good old days" (which weren't that long ago), singer-songwriters of substance WERE often played on mainstream radio and sold millions of records. I'm talking about people like James Taylor, Jackson Browne, Cat Stevens, and of course Paul Simon (who, BTW, is coming out with a new CD later this year.. you think waiting three years is hard, try ten!). What irks me is that this has become increasingly harder to do. Of late, Sarah MacLachlan has broken through. I think some of her work has substance. Dar is poised to break through to mainstream success. The songs on THE GREEN WORLD show that Dar has NOT sold out, they are thoughtful, intelligent, funny, etc. Norman ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 25 Jul 2000 16:42:50 -0400 From: "Norman A.
