TWASD is a *ballad*?!<<< LOL...that's true too....never thought of it. Actually, Ellis says they are releasing two versions of the song as a single, "the quiet movie version, and a rocked up version... both sound great, and we are thrilled by the potential for increased awareness of the song and my catalogue..." I haven't seen the movie, but I heard that one playing of the song has it sort of "mellowed out" by an orchestra arrangement? Maybe that's the "ballad" USA Today refers to. (Any Sonoma County people, she's playing at the Powerhouse in Sebastopol tonight). On this swing through she brought a band. Last time she played here it was just her and her husband. They were at KRCB radio last night to promote the Powerhouse gig. She puts on a wonderful show and is very fun to listen to and watch. So go! that's all for now. See everyone at the Sebastopol Richard show. I'll be the concert slave so look for me! katie stohlmann http://userwww.sfsu.edu/~stohlman PS - remember how everyone was talking about how great Chris Smither was a few weeks back? I just saw him at the Kate Fest and he was really awesome. I love how he tunes his guitar in rhythm to the tappage of his feet. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 29 Jun 2000 19:36:21 -0400 From: Katie Mahoney Subject: [RS] Use your love like a suture, that's a good place to begin (Anything to drag the Ellis discussion out for as long as possible . . . ) Kerry blasphemed: >Ellis Paul - I'd recommend anything >OTHER than Translucent Soul, which I, >personally, thought was dreadful and >cheesy (don't attack, don't attack!). And Smokey agreed: >No attacks. :-) That's probably my least >favorite one too. Don't listen to them, Jeff! I LOVE Translucent Soul! That and Live are my favorite albums of his. If you're willing to spend $20 on the double CD, I'd highly recommend Live as an introduction to Ellis . . . wonderful songs, funny intros, a couple of poems, old stuff, new stuff, and just (for the most part) Ellis and his guitar. It's an excellent, excellent album. If you don't want to start with a double album, and you don't like as much production (although I don't like production, either, and I don't find Translucent Soul overproduced AT ALL), then I'd recommend you start with Stories, simply because I'm not that fond of the other two albums. Carnival of Voices was my first Ellis CD (which I bought solely because I desperately wanted "Changing Your Name," and "Change" was the closest I could find), and none of the songs on it have ever come even close to hitting me the way the songs on his other albums do. I do like "Paris in a Day," but Patty Griffin's gorgeous voice adds a lot; I also like "Weightless," which can be found on Live. I don't know, it's probably one of those albums that I'll listen to in a couple of years and think, "How could I have not loved this from the start?" but for now, it's not a CD I'd recommend for starting with. And this is me sticking my tongue out at Kerry for not liking Translucent Soul :-P Ciao! Though Translucent Soul has Dar's harmony on "Angel in Manhattan", the Live version has Ellis' intro. to it-- very funny. Ob Richard: With a Dar song in "Smoke Signals" and an Ellis song "Me, Myself, and Irene" (anyone see it yet?) and the potential for a Dar and/ or a Lucy song to be in an UNNAMED movie by an UNNAMED director, now Richard should get one of his songs in a movie. Pat: >>Well, if there's any truth to the rumour that Sherman Alexie is working on an adaptation of "Young Men And Fire," perhaps there's hope!! >> More than rumor. Richard mentioned it to me. Alexie mentioned it in Biblio magazine last year and it's on Alexie's website. I haven't heard anything about it for some months now. But that would be a James Keelaghan song (or a Richard song that James wrote). OK, second guessing Sherman Alexie, who would you have to play Dodge? I see Kevin Costner as a possibility but I'm not sure about that. Norman ------------------------------ End of shindell-list-digest V2 #141 ***********************************
