Y'all are probably sick of discussing those older songs by now (no pun intended, sorry) but can I just say, damn! Richard really paints a picture I can't get out of my head! And it only took one time through. I'm scarred for life. Since Borders has such a nice, complete Folk section it's hard to leave without my hands full. Consequently I picked up another Lucy record. Almost picked up Peter Mulvey too. I must say that I prefer Richard's voice on Magdalen(e) to Dar's. Don't get me wrong...I love Dar's voice. Anyway, I'll compare the verses when I get home, thanks. j a c ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 13 Jun 2000 14:59:50 -0700 From: "Brandy Schaffels" Subject: [RS] nuns and saints Norman, Thanks for the info! I've heard it called "Catholic Light" I've been an agnostic with atheistic leanings for sometime but I still remember some of the church practices. There's quite a bit of variation in the practice. High church Episcopalian is quite close to Catholicism in rituals (without papal authority, of course). Anyone here have experience with the Angilican Church? On the other hand, low church Episcopalian practice is much like Lutherian. Then again, there's quite a bit of variation within most of the larger demominations. Too stilted, too preachy. Plus she does the "backwards verses" version, which just sounds "wrong" to me. Truth be told, RockinRon and I had the honor of hearing the single most spectacular version of that song ever sung, performed by Lucy Kaplansky at a concert out on Long Island last year. It was a co-bill with Richard, who had a horrible cold and could barely sing. But someone in the audience requested the song, and Lucy volunteered to sing it. Angelic, I tell ya, angelic. Lucy BECAME Mary Magdelene. Ron, and whoever else was there that night (all 30 of you), back me up on this. Could someone please enlighten me as to what this beautiful song is supposed to represent. Is it all metaphor or what?? I've been listening to On a Sea of Fleur-de-lis for several days now, and I still cannot for the life of me figure out what the heck its supposed to be about. >> Neither can Richard, it seems. Here's what the man himself says, from the "Ask Richard" section of his website: ____________________________ Fleur-de-Lis is a mystery to me. It was the first song I wrote -- or, I should say, finished -- and to this day I don't know where it came from. I remember that the during the process of writing it (which took about one month) I was in some kind of trance. I was walking around mumbling to myself. But I can say where the first line came from. In college, I was in a play called Dark of the Moon. It's a story based upon a version of the Ballad of Barbara Allen, in which a witch-boy falls in love with a human woman (Barbara). In order to court her, he must be permanently changed into a human. Witches and normal humans (in the song, at least) cannot join otherwise. So, one of the verses of the song goes: Conjur Man, oh Conjur Man Please do this thing I'm askin' Change me to a human man For Barbara I'd be courtin'. I had found the script in a pile of boxes a few years later, and it occurred to me that the witch-boy might have thought better of his wish. From that initial kernel, however, the song became much more complicated than that. Beyond this, I think I take Iris Dement's advice and just let the mystery be. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 13 Jun 2000 22:29:29 EDT From: Sdgold60@aol.com Subject: [RS] Who is mary magdelene ( do i care how its spelled) it thiink that Lucy is a sensual and provocative MARY M and i think she looks like her.. what ever mary looked like dar i hear the innocence the love the adoration-the caring the soul of the songs Lucy its about SEX and love and the man and not feeling like that MY favorite is Richard - who seems to moan it sometimes those long notes and i feel the longing of not being able to recapture taht love three voices three differnt types of loves i would like a vote with the men on this list to see which womens versions they prefer.... i will keep my guess to myself NOW that show where LUCY outted mary mag on LI has become a historic classic that people talk about even lucy and Richard talk about the ten year cold night....
