I thought they had the inside track, but maybe their train of thought derailed. >> There was an early (and in my opinion, not well done) review by Hugh Blumenfeld that makes this mistake. I think that's where you got it from. There's lots of stuff that up for interpretation but it is quite clear from the literal read of the lyrics that Sister Maria's choir was from the prison. With respect to the casting call, Dana Delany is a great choice. Richard's said that when he was at Union Theological, he wanted to be the "cool priest". Well, how about a cool nun? Dana Delany! Presumably this an outdoor venue. Richard is playing a free concert there Friday July 7. Will this show have a band or be solo? My wife and I are going to drive up from Atlanta to see the show. We're somewhat concerned that there won't be too many people there who are familiar with him, but we can't make the Thurs. July 6 show at the Bluebird in Nashville, which is what we'd prefer. Positively. Absolutely positively. >> Well, I have always seen it the complete opposite way. Yes, she's driving an empty van to the prison. I mean, the choir obviously did not drive with her in the van, or else it's likely that one of the "baritones" would have been changing the tire, not the nun. But the fact that it's called "St. Agnes' Choir" and NOT "The Rahway State Prison Inmate Choir" has always led me to believe that the choir was NOT made up of inmates. So, why does she "enter the common room" and find that the choir is already there? Well, she and the choir may have taken separate vans, and, well, she DID have the flat tire which would have allowed the choir to get there first. And just because the line says "Altos and baritones, basses and tenors, car-thieves and crack-dealers, mobsters and murderers" doesn't mean that the singers and the inmates are necessarily one and the same. RG, always seeing things differently. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 12 Jun 2000 21:41:16 EDT From: Sdgold60@aol.com Subject: [RS] MY CASTING of characters the Inspector in Fishing would be Robert DUVALLE or danny devito ST agnes Nun would be played by Gena Rowlands how can you not use christopher walken in a richard shindell song- all of em harvey keitel in transit as head of Prison Tom cruise as the pill popper with Al Pacino as the doller of the pills Billy bob thornton sittin on the porch of STORM watch what about Johnny depp and john malkovich and jack nicholson these guys fit in for sure Id even put harry connick jr behind the wheel of the Kenworth and he can sing.... ray romano is the guy who gets left in AYHN THE arrowhead kid is Matt DAMON as for the shindell women - Sissy Spacek in the Reunion Hill or MERYL - she did one of those already My mary magdelene would be NATALIE MERCHANT or Wynona RIDER though Angelina Jolie would give it a different spin and NORA- minnie driver? demi moore? selma hayek? holly hunter sharon *************************************************** dont cry, you know the tears will do no good so dry our eyes oh they have told you life is hard misery from the start its dull, its slow its painful but i tell you life is sweet in spite of the misery there is so much more to be grateful natalie merchant LIFE is SWEET ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 12 Jun 2000 21:54:52 -0400 From: "Norman A. "St. Agnes' Choir" is the regular choir for the church. Sister Maria is part (or even director) of that choir but she also directs the prisoner's choir. The only mention of St. Agnes' Choir is that the van belongs to it. I second Sharon's nomination of Tom Cruise as "Mr. Wall Street" in "Confession" but hasn't he already played this role...several times? Hello Everybody: Just thought I'd ask a question that I'm starting to think about: Who else from this list is going to Clearwater this weekend? I know we have a lot of people on this list from the NYC metro area - so I figure there must be a bunch, yes? Is there any point to trying to get together? I know Richard won't be there but Dar will... and a bunch of other people... and it would be fun ( at least I think it would be fun) to meet some of the people on this list whose names I know but whom I've never met. Anyway, that's what I was thinking. So what do you all think? The Clearwater info is available at www.clearwater.org/festival.html . Might be nice if we all got together for lunch or dinner or something. OK... see ya... I see that type of choir (all male voices) being more Anglican church than RC (but hey, I'm a Presbyterian, so what do I know??). Sr. Maria's a choir director, and has a group of voices coming from different religious backgrounds. She's chosen to work up "Softly and Tenderly" because it's very inclusive and has a message with meaning to a bunch of prisoners. I don't think of it as either a particularly RC or Protestant hymn (but would lean toward the P end of the dial). To be honest, it isn't in the current Presbyterian hymnal...I don't know about the other mainline Protestant denominations. And unless it's a huge parish, I don't see them having a fleet of vans. Maybe one big ol' school bus, it it was that big, but.... As far as the alto thing goes...I'm an alto, but on a good day, I could be a tenor, too...sometimes during choir rehearsal I sing along with the basses....so, if it's a good part, who wouldn't want to try to sing it? Nancy (who wishes she could sing the alto part on the hymns every week, but the new organist doesn't play them in a way that is four-part friendly and who favors anyone who was in The Flying Nun to play Sr. Maria...Sally Field? Marge...uh Redmond?? Or Blair Brown, even though she was not in TFN) "O for the wonderful love He has promised, Promised for you and for me.
