I've been bending the ears of some listers regarding what to play first before I take the plunge, and it's funny: NONE of them suggested Seagull. OK, I kill myself and have probably offended a certain Canadian guitar maker already -- with my luck someone from that company reads this list. As for the theft, I can't imagine what that's like. I hope the jerk didn't run into trouble trying to sell it and just dumped it in a river or dumpster somewhere. john andrew "talks too much but not a poet" clary ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 05 Jun 2000 14:59:24 -0500 From: "David E. I noticed when Richard was playing The Old Town School here in Chicago that he had a new Martin (new to me since his last appearance in Chicago) and it looked like a 15 series guitar - certainly on the low end of the Martin line. I'm assuming that he bought that as a touring guitar and would probably record and play with a higher end guitar. He sounded awesome with it though leading me to contemplate trading all my more expensive guitars in and just practice, practice, practice! But then again, some of us need a better guitar to compensate for our lack of prowess. Richard could probably make any guitar sound great! Can anyone at Y/H confirm this guitar as a touring guitar? Subject: [RS] A new guitar for Peter! How do you feel? I could be in agreement on this one; I have never been a big fan of seagulls either. I was surprised to see Peter sporting one at his show in town a few weeks back. It may be because I had a hairy roommate who used clog up the shower drains and play Seagull guitars, or it may be because I never liked the factory setup of the instrument (both convincing reasons in their own right). Either way, I have learned to avoid that make of guitar. I do not prefer the "Seagull look" either when it comes right down to it. I have to admit that the instrument sounded good at the show (although not great). However, considering the pre-amp, the processing, and the PM trademark screwy-tunings (meant in a good way of course) I'm not sure that I believe my ears. With this in mind I'm proposing that the RS list, in it's infinite wisdom and mercy, get together and decide on what PM's next guitar should be. I'm going to throw out the first pitch and I have a feeling that one or more of you may hit this out of the park, but here goes anyway: I think that PM would look and sound great playing a... Tacoma Chief (http://www.tacomaguitars.com/models/c/c1c_image.htm) The looks are innovative, as are PM's guitar stylings. Also, it sounds great and is built with love in the great state of Washington by my favorite guitar company. Now that that is out of the way we can let the pelting begin. I'll just slip into my Kevlar vest and knickers... ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 5 Jun 2000 16:35:09 -0400 From: "Brandt Barretto" Subject: RE: [RS] Peter's guitar... Dave (and listers), <> When RS came to Carrboro, NC back in mid-April he was playing a Martin...It was a small body and might have been a 16-series. It was not likely a 15 because they are the ones that are all mahogany -- including the top. Methinks it was a OOO-16 or variation thereof. What I would like to know is what pickup system he is using...I need to upgrade mine at some point. Any suggestions from listers? I noticed when Richard was playing The Old Town School here in Chicago that he had a new Martin (new to me since his last appearance in Chicago) and it looked like a 15 series guitar >> Really? A mahogany-topped guitar with no binding? That's the lowest priced guitar line (we don't even consider the DXM line as real guitars do we?) Martin makes with "Martin" on the peg head. I agree that a great guitar player can make a low-end guitar sound better than I can. Also, IMO under-saddle transducer pickups make high-end guitars sound just as "good" as the low-enders. Since most live situations make mic'ing a nightmare, pickups are a needed evil. So I guess I was just giving PM a hard time without giving him a chance to hear me. Why shouldn't RS use a cheaper Martin live? I mean, a few hours of hand oil on the neck and a good set-up and it will play good enough for live performances, right? When I play live I can't tell the difference in the monitor mix between my DM, D1 and J40. j a c ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 5 Jun 2000 22:14:22 +0100 From: "Dave McKay" Subject: [RS] Re: Peter's guitar... Thats's why I'm assuming that he's found a nice low-end guitar or two that works fine for the venues he plays but would rather sit down with a higher-end instrument at home or in the studio. Plus, there are so many other variables in sound, I suppose the guitar itself is secondary. Dave ------------------------------ End of shindell-list-digest V2 #103 ***********************************
