Pat said about "Chelsea Hotel": > To be succinct with my thoughts . . . It's not that a song with "strong > sexual content" wouldn't be of interest to women but "giving me head on > the unmade bed" is not (from my experiences) a line many women I've known > would find endearing. I guess the key here is someone can like a song without necessarily endorsing it. It also helps that the song was written about someone *else*--I don't know if I'd want that song to be written about me, per se, but I do think that it has a kind of raw and honest tenderness that is totally compelling, and this is common to most of Cohen's work. Also, I don't see the song, (even the "unmade bed" line) as being objectifying or disrespectful to women in general, so I don't have any problem with it on that front. On the other hand, a song like the ever-popular "Back Dat A** Up" is not exactly my cup of tea. I was introduced to Cohen by my high school photo teacher who lent me a CD of covers (Nick Cave, another favorite of mine, covered "Tower of Song"). Loved it so much, I figured I better get the real deal. :-) Peace, Love, and Mischief, Vanessa ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 05 Jun 2000 10:37:49 -0400 From: Kerry Bernard Subject: [RS] Re: In Praise of Peter & Chris Jeff wrote: >Can you recommend a few choice albums for a beginner of their music? It's just an excellent album, all around, full of gems and really mixing together all the best aspects of his previous albums (although to back up what Graham said - I got on a real RAPTURE kick this past weekend and listened to that CD *all* weekend long). Also, Ron is very correct in saying that Chris Smither's new live CD (LIVE AS I'LL EVER BE) is absolutely amazing. It will be out on July 18 but, in the meantime, you might want to try my favourite Smither CD - SMALL REVELATIONS (which is probably my favourite because I think the song "Slow Surprise" is one of the most beautiful songs EVER). You can hear soundclips from both of these CDs, as well as order them online, at our website: http://www.younghunter.com/merch.html Or, if you want to find out more about the guys individually, their websites are: http://www.petermulvey.com http://www.smither.com Always happy to rave about m'boys, Kerry :) NP: Chris Smither, SMALL REVELATIONS (After talking about it, I had to hear "Slow Surprise" - gawd, I love this song...) =================================================== Kerry Bernard kerry@younghunter.com Young/Hunter Management 781.643.2773 (ph) Arlington, MA 781.643.0416 (fax) =================================================== ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 5 Jun 2000 08:55:35 -0700 From: "Clary, John (CLRY)" Subject: [RS] Richard in Sebastopol I bought my tickets last week directly from KRCB, (707) 585 - 8522. Soooo, yes they are available =) BTW, Katie, Bruce was very pleased that you are promoting this show on the list. Maybe you earned some free time to enjoy the show! I may have an extra ticket because my wife is backing out. I tried to convince her that there would be no dancing or drug-induced twirling dervishes or loud drunks to get in the way of the music, but her experience with live music is all C/W in cowboy bars and doesn't believe that civilized folks attend folk shows. So, if anyone decides at the last minute to come to this one, I'll leave the extra ticket with Katie at her Popsicle stand (if she doesn't mind) and it'll be a freebie. john andrew clary > -----Original Message----- > From: katie stohlmann [SMTP:stohlman@sfsu.edu] > Sent: Sunday, June 04, 2000 9:42 AM > > Speaking of Richard Shindell, I think tickets for his show in Sebastopol > are on sale. Pat, are you by chance a John Michael Talbot fan? john andrew clary > -----Original Message----- > From: ptpower@juno.com << Hmmmm . . . Oddly enough, when I've thought about the *reason* I play guitar, I tend to think that Sister Thomas Ann was my biggest influence. In the mid-60s, the Catholic Church began bending its rules a bit and "guitar masses" became a rather regular feature. I thought it rather cool that a nun was playing a guitar (as opposed to changing tires). >> ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 05 Jun 2000 13:16:55 -0400 From: Kerry Bernard Subject: [RS] Y/H Photo Essay... John asked: >BTW, is that a Seagull that PM is playing on this page? Holy good eye, Batman. Yep, it is. As some of you may know, Peter's Lowden guitar was stolen over a year ago (on Valentine's Day, from his car, at a hotel in Middlebury, VT) and, since then, he's been playing what used to be his "subway guitar" - the Seagull (he used to play it in the subway because he was always afraid the Lowden might get stolen down there - ack!). Although the Seagull has served him well, he'd love to have his Lowden back. We've called many music stores and pawn shops around New England but with no luck. So, if you ever happen upon a Lowden L-25, serial #3017, with a cedar top/rosewood back and sides, a Sunrise pickup, a Crown mic inside, a flower inlay on headstock (Peter took the inlay from his great-grandfather's fiddle and had it put on, in place of the word "Lowden"), black (ebony) tuning buttons, 2 input jacks, and a HUGE wear mark under sound hole, LET US KNOW! Also, to see a pic of the guitar: http://www.petermulvey.com/guitar.html I gotta stop reading this list. I'm getting no work done today. My intro to him came some years ago. I had heard of him and decided at the last minute to go check him out at the Palms. Got there late. His show was half over. I walk up to the front door of the Palms, which is sort of an old barn, and stand outside listening for a minute. That's interesting, I think to myself. Sounds like he's got a small band in there. Another guitarist, a percussionist and maybe a bass player. So I walk in and it's just Smither, playing solo. He's playing percussion by thomping these big feet on the floor. And I swear the guy must have six fingers on both hands. Great, soulful singer, too. By the way, Kelly Joe Phelps is on my watch list, too. Seven fingers on that boy's hand, one of them, made of glass. - -lee ------------------------------ End of shindell-list-digest V2 #102 ***********************************
