Greetings to all fellow Richard Shindell fans! I am a new fan, I only discovered Richard a couple of months ago but I am now officially in love with his music!I was fortunate enough, thanks to WFUV, to attend the 10:30pm show at the Bottom Line on April 27th. It was a fabulous, heartwarming evening to say the very least! Mary Gotthier opened for Richard. I found her to be very witty, with clever lyrics and a soulful voice. As Richard sang his first song, I was instantly hooked, mesmerized by his beautiful voice and haunting guitar. My mom and I, both being new to Richard's music, were equally impressed and moved by his passionate performance. During a couple of minor problematic situations(one of his acoustic guitars refusing to amplify due to a wiring malfunction and later on one of his strings snapped), he kept the audience entertained by reciting a clever joke about an accordion player. When he was finished replacing his guitar string he plunged right back into the show. It was all so intimate and personal, the captive audience was barely affected by the 5 minute delay. Incidents like these are what make "live" music so special, it's very spontaneous and fun! Richard also shared some of his own personal stories explaining the meaning and inspiration of each song, which only added to the already exquisite presentation. I was completely exhilarated by his poignant lyrical style and unique delivery. I felt the combination of the band with Richard resulted in a truly amazing musical experience and each of them deserve a round of applause! During quite a few songs, I felt tears well up in my eyes and did my best to keep from crying. I was honestly moved to tears! Words can hardly begin to describe the MAGIC that took place on that stage! I couldn't have wished for a better seat. I was at the very first table attached to the stage, about two feet from Richard! But actually there really wasn't a bad seat in the house. The Bottom Line is a very cozy environment, perfect for Richard's musical style. I want to give WFUV my praise and gratitude for enabling me to attend this spectacular concert and sharing this wonderful evening with my mother. This will certainly be a cherished memory for all my remaining years. And if WFUV were to ever have another SongBook Essay Contest, I would definitely draw upon this memory as my source of inspiration! Thank you WFUV for introducing me to such an incredible artist! After the show I was so impressed and overwhelmed I could hardly contain myself. I cannot believe there was this amazing artist out there in the musical world I didn't know about! Now, I know what I have been missing out on and I plan to pick up ALL of his CD's A.S.A.P!! I have been to practically one hundred shows in my 27 years, but I must say this was one of the best I have ever attended!! I am so thrilled to have discovered Richard Shindell. I feel as though a whole new world has been opened up for me! I would love to correspond and get to know all of my fellow Richard fans!!! Two minutes on the soapbox, if I may...Wherever you live, there is likely to be a public radio station that plays stuff that you're not going to hear anywhere else. I live on Long Island, and there is not a single radio station not broadcasting from a college campus that is willing to take even the slightest risk. Nothing but formula pop, jock rock, and 'classic' Boston and REO Speedwagon. Enough already. Stations like WFUV from Fordham in the Bronx, WXPN in Philadelphia, and the others like it are the only way people like Renee and me get to know about Richard Shindell, Lucy Kaplansky, Julie Miller, and the dozens of people and bands that now make up 75% of my CD collection. (I'll never get rid of 'Bat out of Hell'). I would never tell anyone how to spend their money, but there are a lot of other ways to support these stations if you have a problem with donations, such as answering phones during fund drives or displaying their bumper stickers. If we don't keep these stations alive, we're looking at a future of Celene Dion, 98 Degrees, and Bad Company. (O.K., that's a bit dramatic, but I really do feel strongly about this) In any case, thanks for the note, Renee. I just joined this list in January. It's really well run, and a lot of fun. Do you think it would be a horrible breach of protocol if I were to hunt down Ann Powers and give her a big fat kiss? I am a very happy man. RS Is this a great time to be a Shindell fan or what? I wasn't able to attend the Iron Horse show friday night, so I went to the Somerville theater show. I haven't seen that show discussed on the list yet. I thought Richard and the band were great, but the sound sucked. Maybe I was too close to the stage or something, but the mix was all wrong...Larry was virtually inaudible for the first 1/2 of the show. It did improve towards the end, however. More Good News: Richard and the band have been added to the line-up at the Newport Folk Festival!!!
