I'll enthusiastically third that! Ms. Rusby is just plain wonderful. I actually got it into my head last year that a Richard Shindell/Kate Rusby co-bill (or tour, even!) would be a brilliant thing. I can just see you fellow Kate fans saying, "Oh MAN that would be great!" (because, frankly, everyone said that) but, alas, as it happens, Kate "doesn't much fancy the idea of flying" (which is why she's never toured in the US, I guess) so it never panned out (which is not to say that, if she'd wanted to fly, it would have been a done deal - I just mean that the possibility was pretty much an instant write-off). Oh well, someday... sigh. And speaking of amazing co-bills, I just found out that the folks at Fleming, Tamulevich and Associates (the illustrious booking agency who books Dar, Ani, Gorka, and so many others) are planning to sponsor a co-bill at The Ark to feature Stephen Fearing (or, to use a Katie-ism, "Stephen [My One True Love] Fearing" :) and Sarah Harmer. I just about fell off my chair at the idea of seeing these two on 1 stage. If you live in or near Ann Arbor, look out for this show (likely to happen in August) and do NOT miss it. You can thank me later. I don't know. I think his first four records, all of which were wonderful, were on the High Street label, which was the Windham Hill subsidiary that also had John Gorka and Patty Larkin. Then he went to a label in Nashville - -- the one that put out "Everything Matters" and the album before that. I rank Pettis way up there, especially when he's not co-writing with other people. You know how a Richard Shindell album just gets better and better the more you listen, because there are so many layers to his songs? To a lesser extent, but only slightly, that's how most of Pierce's albums are. For Shindell fans, Pierce Pettis is a must. - --lee ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 14 Apr 2000 11:48:51 PDT From: "cynthia rhodes" Subject: [RS] Voices Today's Subjects: ----------------- _SUBJECTS-AUTHORS_ I readily admit to a bias for Richard, John Gorka and Hugh Blumenfeld - but somebody who I don't ever remember being mentioned here who I feel deserves a listen is Michael Jerling. He may not be quite on Richard's level, but then again WHO IS? :) I recommend My Evil Twin and New Suit Of Clothes- but they may be difficult to find. Your ideas ought to keep me busy for a while, checking out new artists. If this thread goes all weekend, by Monday (when I will next check my e-mail), I should be in heaven! As to John Alvord who thought I was insulting RS's guitar playing. Nothing could be further from the truth. I think Richard is great for his genre. I love his music. What I was saying, was that alot of folk artists are of the three-chord variety and that that, just doesn't do it for me. But, many people, who do not play an instrument or have a certain ear, would never know or care about the level of complexity of a given artist. Also, many folk songs are strongly lyric driven so sometimes the music is incidental to the message. However, I personally cannot take a whole album where that is the case. Lastly, in a purely academic sense, very few guitarists in the rock, folk, or country genres could hold a candle too or begin to play the music that jazz and classical guitarists play. They just have not had the training. Many cannot even read or write music (sadly even our beloved RS). They are a "different animal" altogether. So when I say that that a player is "mediocre" I am comparing them to the Al Di Meola's (jazz/fusion/spanish virtuoso)of the world. Most popular artists do not begin to scratch the surface of what their instruments can do. ________________________________________________ Get your own "800" number - Free Free voicemail, fax, email, and a lot more http://www.ureach.com/reg/tag ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 14 Apr 2000 12:10:22 -0800 From: Lee Wessman Subject: Re: [RS] Thank for Responding to "Beautiful Voices" Post Today's Subjects: ----------------- _SUBJECTS-AUTHORS_ elwestrand wrote: " Lastly, in a purely academic sense, very few guitarists in the rock, folk, or country genres could hold a candle too or begin to play the music that jazz and classical guitarists play." Well, every genre has its great musicians. There are plenty of Nashville cats who would just blow away 90 percent of the jazz guitarists who get radio airplay. The same can be said of folkies like Wilcox or Richard Thompson. And what about acoustic steel-string instrumentalists like Pierre Bensusan, Leo Kottke or the late Michael Hedges? There aren't many Al Di Meolas even among the jazz or classical players. To say that jazz players are, by definition, musically superior as a genre is just wrong. I have played for 38 years. I see Richard Shindell as a very solid guitarist. He's seldom flashy. But his playing is strong, precise, his arrangements are inventive, and his playing serves the songs beautifully. - --lee ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 14 Apr 2000 20:27:49 GMT From: jalvo@mbay.net (John Alvord) Subject: Re: [RS] Thank for Responding to "Beautiful Voices" Post Today's Subjects: ----------------- _SUBJECTS-AUTHORS_ On Fri, 14 Apr 2000 15:32:59 -0400, Elwestrand wrote: > >As to John Alvord who thought I was insulting RS's guitar >playing.
