One of my best buddies is going with his boyfriend, and I told them to put in a good word for me with Richard . I bet it's gonna be a lot of fun, since I assume his fan base is not too large down there--you should get a pretty intimate show. Not that it wouldn't be even greater if he *did* have even more fans. Anyway, have fun! :-) Peace, Love, and Mischief, Vanessa P.S. Muchas gracias to tigerboy and John for answering my salty dog question! :-) SoccrDawg@aol.com wrote: > Hey all. I added my comments as well, but I won't bore you with those here, I'll just let you hear what others are saying. :-) Suffice it to say, I think we may have sold quite a few more CDs today. Seems like fans of Ellis like Richard as well, and vice versa. :-) SMOKEY >>>I've heard a few of you mention seeing Richard Shindell, and I just found out last night we're fortunate enough to have him playing in Asheville tomorrow night (at grey eagle, where i first saw ellis...) I've heard him on the radio, and on Mtn. stage, but don't know many of his songs. What should I request, and if he has albumns available at the show, which should i get (we're on a 4 cd a week budget, and can only get 2 more this week...) I can't wait to hear him live!<<< >>>I saw R.S. last night without knowing much about him. You'll have a great time. He does have CDs available after the show (at least he did in STL). One of my favorites from last night's show was actually a pre-show request from someone. I THINK (help me out guys) that it's called "The Way I Remember You"??? Something about a cotton dress and a stolen kiss... Something I wanted to hear last night and didn't was a song he did with Cry Cry Cry called "Cold Missouri Water." He encored with "Are You Happy Now" which was a great song. I wish I could remember what he finished the pre-encore show with--it was a fast-paced awesome song--R. Shindell fan's: what's the name of the Civil War song? That was a great one too.<<< >>>Richard Shindell.....swoon....."Confession" from his newest CD called "somewhere near paterson" is awesome. This morning I heard a live acoustic version of it on WYEP and I swear I had an out-of-body experience as I listened to it. :-) Also....."The Ballad of Mary Magdalen" from an earlier release ("Blue Divide", I think) is one you'll want to hear too. Lucy Kaplansky sings lead on it on the Cry, Cry, Cry version...and it is simply beautiful.<<< >>>Richard Shindell was also extremely nice and what a VOCABULARY. I heard him use the words "impetus" and "paradigm" within the same two sentences. And that was in the first 5 minutes of the show! Yes, I know he did Wisteria; I don't know if he did the others since I'm not recognizing them by title. He did the song about the Best Western--he opened with that. In was in the post-amble of this song that he used impetus and paradigm. What cracked me up about Richard is that he's just this regular guy--the kind of guy I always share chit-chat with in the line at the grocery store--I'm buying my beer I can chew and he's got a loaf of bread, a gallon of milk and Cheerios...and neither of us really wants to be there and we share that ugly karma that causes us to ALWAYS be in the line with the cashier-in-training.<<< >>>A few years ago I was graced with a fabulous housemate who played guitar *really* well. In fact during his Berkely (college of music) days, he was in a band with Reeves Gabrel (now w/David Bowie). Michael definately could have become a peer to don, if he had continued his music studies and not uncovered another calling. Lucky for me, and all the people he's touched as a paramedic (otherwise we never would've met) he went back to school, again lucky for me that the best acoustics in our apt. was in the vaulted hallway outside my bedroom door. M. used to play a lot of Shindell, esp. Are You Happy Now. I liked the lyrics alot, but I guess I never was compelled to buy a shindell cd because, well, did I mention M. would play the same song for an hour straight when he was upset? sometimes, I just wanted to get some sleep ;~) but I'm very open to learning more of his work (in moderation this time). I think my cd budget is more like 1 per month, but then I start to feel like I'm missing out on great stuff. Balance is hard to find.<<< >>>Anyway, you had recommended him so highly and my friend SmartBri (with whom I saw Ellis for the first time and who I hooked up with because we both like Gorka) told me that my collection was sorely lacking without any R. Shindell. (The last recommendation he had for me was Martin Sexton so I know to trust him) Richard was such a nice guy. I complimented him on his vocabulary and he said, "I get paid by the word." Some of his lyrics seemed yanked right out of my head, you know? And when he came back out for the encore, he kind of looked out at us and said something about the encore being a strange convention and told a great story about a show he did in W. Mass. with Lucy K. when they had to wait out the minutes between the show and the encore outside in this snowstorm. I was thinking the same sort of thing at the last two shows I went to (Forbert and Springsteen). I know I keep going on and on about this, but he was just great.<<< ------------------------------ End of shindell-list-digest V2 #17 **********************************
