Otherwise I would have posted directly to the person who posted about it. I am so jealous that you NYers get the opportunity to see that. I think Nick Drake was an absolutely spectacular songwriter full of magic. And I think Duncan is maturing nicely. If anyone makes a bootleg of the show (not that anyone would, mind you) I would be forever in someones debt for a copy! If I could aford it I would fly out to see it. Any chance he's taking this show on the road or recording it? ________________________________________________ Get your own "800" number - Free Free voicemail, fax, email, and a lot more http://www.ureach.com/reg/tag ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 06 Apr 2000 15:02:08 EDT From: "Sally Green" Subject: [RS] Synchronicity of Shindell and de Lint WHOA, NELLY. I was just reading the "Ask Richard" section of the webpage, and I happened across this question: <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< Hello Richard, I met you at the Ottawa Folk Festival today and told you I'd send you a copy of one of my books, but I can't find a mailing address on the Cry Cry Cry CD, so if you could send me an address, I'll send you a book. Great set Sunday night, by the way. cheers Charles de Lint (RS answer) Yes, I remember. I'd love to read the book. Send it to me c/o Young/Hunter Management, 350 Mass Ave., PMB 230, Arlington, MA, 02474, USA. Thanks! >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Charles de Lint has been my ABSOLUTELY FAVORITE AUTHOR for nearly FIFTEEN YEARS and I have adored his writing, sent him fan letters (and he very nicely autographed a book for me), all the typical googly-eyed fan stuff that I have done with regard to Richard and Dar, except through the mail since de Lint lives in Ottawa. I even made him a dream catcher. (I suppose that's similar to when I made Dar, Richard, and Lucy Cry^3 egg ornaments (blew the gook out of the egg and drew on 'em, like we all did in elementary school).) Anyway, how AMAZING. Richard should DEFINITELY read whatever it is that de Lint has sent to Y/H Mgt. My favorite current book by de Lint is called _Memory and Dream_, although I will always have a special place in my heart for _Moonheart_. I have almost ever book he's ever written, and even found an out-of-print one, _The Riddle of the Wren_, through an online out-of-print service for a mere eight bucks. de Lint also plays in a Celtic band, although I have never heard his band's music. I was up near Ottawa two years ago for a family reunion (Clan McIntosh), but unfortunately, it wasn't when the Ottawa Folk Festival was. I adore the internet. - --Sally sallyagreen@hotmail.com ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 06 Apr 2000 15:43:42 -0400 From: Karen Parker Subject: Re: [RS] Synchronicity of Shindell and de Lint Sally Green wrote: > Anyway, how AMAZING. I've read a lot of his stuff, but not all. I've never heard of _The Riddle of Wren_. I recently finished reading his short story collection, Moonlight & Vines. My favourite novel of his is probably Trader. In Trader, one of the characters covers a Luka Bloom song, which I thought was pretty cool, being a big Luka fan. de Lint makes a lot of real-world references in his books (many are set in Ottawa, in fact). Maybe he'll mention Richard in one of them! ;-) > de Lint also plays in a Celtic band, although I have never heard his band's > music. I was up near Ottawa two years ago for a family reunion (Clan > McIntosh), but unfortunately, it wasn't when the Ottawa Folk Festival was. He hosts a jam session here in Ottawa every Thursday night with his wife Marianne. It's at a great little venue called Patty's Pub, and the section of the pub they play in is non-smoking (yay!). So if you're ever in Ottawa, check it out! I gather he's a big folk music fan, because he seems to show up at all the same concerts as me. :-) He was at the Dar concert in the Glebe last May, and I'm pretty sure I saw him at a recent Vance Gilbert/Karen Savoca show as well. Karen P.S. For the curious, de Lint's web page ca be found at http://www.cyberus.ca/~cdl ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 06 Apr 2000 16:28:37 -0400 From: "Norman A. Johnson" Subject: [RS] mutual admiration society-- Shindell and de Lint Yeah, I saw the de Lint note too... in fact, I mentioned it on the list back in Februrary (the 15th) but I guess a good deal of freezing and forgetting has taken place since. ;-) But it is really cool that Richard and Charles are fans of each others work. I really liked _The Little Country_. Norman PS- Where's Kerry? You know, I really like Luka Bloom, too, but I'm a pretty new fan. I was on the Shanachie website three months ago, and I listened to some clips of his, thought they were pretty cool, and a few weeks later, I bought "Salty Heaven" with a gift certificate to the Princeton Record Exchange. It is awesome! And I just bought "Turf" yesterday--I'm growing to love that album, too. What genre would you stick him in, if pushed? Celtic folk? It's sort of ambient Celtic guitar folk, I guess. . . I dunno. Peace, Love, and Mischief, Vanessa - -- "The day will begin like any other, another sunrise in the east. Most of his songs are not distinctly Celtic in sound. He does use alot of Celtic imagery though. But, doesn't "Celtic Folk" conjure up sounds of reels and mandolins and flutes and "wee folk" dancing and so on? ________________________________________________ Get your own "800" number - Free Free voicemail, fax, email, and a lot more http://www.ureach.com/reg/tag ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 6 Apr 2000 14:31:43 -0800 From: Lee Wessman Subject: Re: Re: [RS] Synchronicity of Shindell and de Lint Luka Bloom is definitely more folk than Celtic, with a wee bit of the rock thrown in for good measure. When you see him play, he's running around the stage like he's Pete Townshend or something. His brother, Christy Moore, is a Irish folk legend. My favorite of Luka's albums is still "Riverside." Great, dynamic performer who recently moved back to Ireland after a long stay in New York. - -lee ------------------------------ End of shindell-list-digest V2 #12 **********************************
