I hope you get to go. I think you should just tell Jon exactly what you told us. It's honest and heartfelt, and I'm sure he'd understand. Well, you might want to change the part about "whatever it is Jon's dredged up for me". :-) But other than that.... SMOKEY ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 31 Mar 2000 08:05:55 EST From: RockinRonD@aol.com Subject: [RS] Torch the Record Companies In a message dated 3/30/2000 11:46:07 PM Eastern Standard Time, Lee Wessman writes: << I'm still paying an average of $14 to $16 for CDs in the west, but I've seen a few poking around at $17 lately. What's pathetic is when you think about how much of that typically goes to the artist. A buck, maybe. >> A buck? Try about a quarter. Sometimes even less. And they cost about two bucks to make. Elton John gave a great interview with Matt Lauer on Wednesday morning on the Today Show and pretty much blasted the big record companies, calling them a bunch of "thieves" for what they charge for CD's and for how little goes to the artists who made them. He talked of how he has gotten to know the Back Street Boys (I know, I know) and how they are just now beginning to see a little money after years of blood sweat and guts. I'm no fan of the Boys but certainly they deserve to be able to make a good living from the work they put in. Elton also talked about how the Grammy Awards need "to be taken with a pinch of salt" and how the awards virtually ignore any category of music beyond mainstream. He promoted the idea of honoring indie artists as well as experimental artists. If this could happen, maybe a Richard or Dar would get the recognition they deserve beyond their own fan lists. Smart guy that Elton. Pretty great songwriter too. The Barns and the Filene Center at Wolf Trap are (IMO) two of the best venues anywhere. I'm also seeing Lyle Lovett (again) at the Trap in August. Someone posted this to the Rose Polenzani list, and I'm disgustingly behind on digests of the Dar and Richard kind, so I don't have the faintest idea if it's already been posted, but I'll send it on anyways. Yay for Tracy Chapman, who never plays anywhere near me! (Wait, I'm not happy about that at all . . . ) Please send this on to any other lists you belong to. (Erin McKeown is supposedly on the bill as well.) Ciao!
