But despite only periodic glimpses of sun, the day was packed full with sunny music. Not really packed with people at first, though. A traveling bill of acts and activities slanted toward adults with active lifestyles, the Jeep World Outdoor Festival didn't have a chance against Atlanta's hyperactive rush hour, so several of the early acts -- performing from 3:20 p.m. until the 11 p.m. curfew -- played to meager crowds. But that didn't visibly stem their enthusiasm. Flanking an aerial trampoline and ski-jump showcase, off to one side of scuba and kayak pools and snowboard simulators, California's Maroon 5 (fresh off Michelle Branch and Nikka Costa tour exposure) sang soul-influenced Stevie Wonder-meets-Lenny Kravitz breezy party pop for a doting row of cooing teenage girls. Next, Maine's spiky haired Howie Day -- accompanying himself through live looping samples -- drew reasonably for one of the day's most impressive performances - both technically and emotionally. Day built a swelling full sound somewhere between David Gray, Jeff Buckley, and Radiohead out of creatively slapping, strumming, and stroking an acoustic guitar. He also managed to take the day's only applause-garnering effects pedal solo. Howie Day On the main stage, Ziggy Marley spread one love to the spread-out crowd, the Melody Makers' scratchy backbeat reverberating even more forcefully from the huge shed without enough bodies to absorb the positive vibes. The group ran through some hits and some material Marley called "a work in progress" -- equal parts dub and reggae -- before making way for Ohio's O.A.R., who had the benefit of it being post-rush hour when it played its reggae-flecked freewheelin' folk-rock, complete with average-guy Dave Matthews Band appeal. So by the time co-headliner Train nonchalantly took the stage, there was a palpable above average mood to party, and as Train launched into "She's on Fire," men and women, women and women, and moms and daughters equally swayed in the soft light. Train's sensitive, searching rock found its way home -- in ways literally -- to Atlanta, as lead singer Patrick Monahan announced they were recording in town as he introduced a new song, "Lincoln Ave.," a piano-driven Paul McCartney-like piece. Hits including "Meet Virginia" and "Drops of Jupiter" followed, as well as highlight "Mississippi" and another new one, "Superstar," which sounded a lot like an Aerosmith ballad. Appropriately, the band closed with a cover of "Dream On." Train After a short break, AC/DC's "You Shook Me All Night Long" boomed as Sheryl Crow walked out on leather-clad American thighs jumping directly into a driving "Steve McQueen." It's easy to forget how many hits Crow has, but she certainly reminded the crowd, running through "Everyday Is a Winding Road," "My Favorite Mistake," "Leaving Las Vegas," and "If It Makes You Happy" within the first 30 minutes. Her band rode along for soulful dirty slide shimmies and audience sing-alongs, as well as songs from the new album, including "C'mon, C'mon," the stomping "Lucky Kid," "Weather Channel" (which she announced as her favorite) and, of course, the big hit, "Soak Up the Sun." Charging through "A Change Would Do You Good," the band segued in to the Who's "Can't Explain" before closing out to piano-ballad "Safe and Sound" and Led Zeppelin's "Rock and Roll." Threats of rain and smoggy commutes aside, those who made it left with sunny, beaming faces. - -- Tony Ware ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 14 Jul 2002 22:33:17 +0200 From: Brigitte Subject: [sheryl-crew] Fwd: Re: Your request to join TheWindingRoad Thought you might wanna know this about the Jeep World Outside tour from Jeff who saw Sheryl in Charlotte, NC on July 10th. I was curious about all the activities outside the concert, cause I've never seen anything like that. We just do music only festivals here in Europe. Just wanted to give you guys the heads up.
