I have the TNMC songbook and a Greatest Hits one and rented the other songbooks at the librairy but most of the songs have all these different tunings, capo's (well ok those aren't that difficult), hard chords etc.. The only song that I can play along really well without the need for physical finger therapy afterwards is Anything But Down (also the first song I ever learned to play on the guitar with chords.. some progress I made huh?). How does Sheryl come up with those chords?? The demon I battle to this day I must keep strong watch over Otherwise, I may fall back into a place That I don't want to see again. As I pass through this phase And regain the better part of who I once was I learn to accept my faults and live with them As I live my life in the world's shadow. As I look back at my life, I see I've come a long way From the boy whose torture led him to push back I look forward with an eye on my past And I'm free from the clouds that shrouded my path. There are many reasons she uses the chords and tunings you find in her songs. Which key best suits the vocals, is slide guitar being used, overall mood, etc. I think boredom also plays a part in it. After writing hundreds of songs, it becomes a challenge to come up with new and different ways of doing things. Using capos and alternate tunings is one good way to accomplish that. Along with that comes different and unusual chord fingerings. All of this can make it frustrating for the beginner or even intermediate players. You have no choice but to just play as much as possible, develop finger strength and dexterity, really focus and listen to guitar parts to develop your ear, study, watch what other guitar players are doing, and then play some more. It's really a great thing to be able to listen to a song and figure out how to play all of the guitar parts accurately. With time and a lot of practice, it will come.
