I quote: "Also there was the iffy health I was in and my.... [snip]. My cyclical depression struck really hard this time. Had Mariah Carey not done it first, I had checked myself into a hospital." Also at Cape Girardeau last year, she made a joke about this. The Weather Channel was "the most depressing song I've ever written. This is right before I pulled a Mariah Carey and checked into a mental hospital." (off course she's joking here, but it makes sense if you read what she says in the Rolling Stone article) I've read in old interviews that she had been suffering of depressions for many years. But in the more recent interviews it was never brought up. I think this is the first time in a long while she talks about them again.
