Rufus Wainwright's version of the John Lennon-Paul McCartney song ``Across the Universe'' has been selected as the first single from the all-Beatles-songs soundtrack to New Line's ``I Am Sam.'' The soundtrack is scheduled for release Jan. 8 by Richard Branson's V2; the film will have an Oscar-qualifying run in L.A. beginning Dec. 28. ``Radio in different cities is already playing the entire record,'' said V2 president Andy Gershon. ``In New York, four different stations are playing Eddie Vedder's 'You've Got to Hide Your Love Away.' In Boston almost every track has been played on the radio.'' The ``I Am Sam'' disc will include 17 cover versions of Beatles tunes, among them the Wallflowers doing ``I'm Looking Through You,'' Sheryl Crow singing ``Mother Nature's Son'' and Ben Folds performing ``Golden Slumbers.'' Although covers of Beatles tunes have appeared in films -- Elliott Smith sang ``Because'' in DreamWorks' ``American Beauty'' and Fiona Apple warbled ``Across the Universe'' for New Line's ``Pleasantville'' -- this marks one of the most ambitious soundtrack projects in recent years. ``I don't think music determines whether a film grosses $20 million or $30 million, but this music complements the emotions of the movie. The soundtrack's success depends to a degree on the success of the film, but it still has to be a great record,'' Gershon said. Gershon, who agreed to be involved with the soundtrack only after seeing the film, said he hopes Ben Harper's ``Strawberry Fields Forever'' will be the second single.
