This whole Napster/bootleg/counterfeit issue drives me nuts. On Napster, I'm not sure why it's not being treated like radio? You aren't charged to listen and tape radio are you? No, so why should you be charged to listen to and download Napster material.....ok, ok, radio is different in that money is paid by advertisers to radio stations so that said station can pay licenceing fees to rights companys like SOCAN and ASCAP/BMI. Bing! a light bulb just went off.....how about placing advertising on Napster??? In an audio format attached to the mp3 itself..or even better, in some visual aspect, perhaps a "skin" placed on your computer's mp3 player? Coca Cola for instance could pay a Napster server to advertise for them, in turn the server pays the fees to the rights companies and we the users can do what we want. It only seems logical to me. Already adds are placed on websites. Why not take it one step further? To the guy who said (Mark I think?) that concert taping is wrong. First, I think what Paul meant was that there is a huge difference between a bottlegged concert and a pirated copy of "the Globe Sessions." Pirating is just plain wrong.....but bootlegging..well, Let's set up a senario shall we. Ok, say you had never heard of Sheryl Crow. Then by chance you hear her on the radio and decide to yourself...."hey, that was a great song...I'm gonna go by a copy." So you head down to your local record store and see the Sheryl section. In it there are copies of all her commercially available albums, they all look very proffesional and prolly only cost about 20$. Also in the section you see a couple of discs that look kinda off? Like perhaps they were made on a computer and they have the song you are looking for, but you notice they are more expensive. Now as a first time listener...what are you going to buy? The cheaper, "real" one! Newbies don't buy boots. So who are the buyers of the bootlegs??? The people who have already bought all of the albums and and singles available anyway!! If Sheryl made concerts available, sure I'd buy them from her instead..but she doesn't, so I buy boots. I manage a record store and have seen fanatics buy all of the commercialy available Pearl Jam concert albums. Yes, all 25, all at once! Sorry to rant and to rave. I don't want to start any flame wars cause the above is just my opinion. If you don't aggree, that's cool. email me and try and convince i'm wrong. ;-) Happy New Year everybody. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 3 Jan 2001 13:47:21 -0600 (CST) From: crowfan@webtv.net (Mondo Biondo) Subject: [sheryl-crew] Good News:Grammy... Who? No one is supporting that..except for the fans themselves who buy the bootlegs. If you think about it..a bootleg is a piece of material that is not available for sale, so there is no loss of income for the artist, because they weren't standing to make anything anyway. I think it's low when someone tapes a show and tries to sell it for $40, but it's only your fault if you choose to pay that much. Fans trading bootleg concerts that they aren't making a profit off of is hardly the same thing. If I had the chance to meet Sheryl, I would so not waste the time lecturing her about this stuff anyway lol.. - ---------------------------------------------------- Join Care2.com's Race for the Rain Forest! This is what our Sheryl had to say: "I'm one of a dying breed who goes out and tours all the time. Labels don't spend the money to send people out to play before they become famous, but we did do that so the fans we have are word-of-mouth fans who have been traveling around with us for years, and they buy the albums. But they're also the ones who go out and get bootlegs." explains Crow as the reason for her current boom on the bootlegging market. "I don't discourage bootlegging, I like playing live. I don't think it hurts my album sales at all if there are bootlegs out there. Who cares?" - Classic Rock Magazine 6/99 Most musicians are cool with trading live recordings. Some have rules, such as you can't sell it for money or have to get rid of the bootleg if the band releases an official one. As much as we hear about Metallica vs. Napster, Metallica is actually cool with people downloading there live stuff on Napster. They say that bootlegs capture the moments of the concert, and they are okay with that. They have problems when people downloading their studio stuff. I've downloaded live Metallica on Napster, haven't been kicked off. my 2 cents... Yahoo!
