Brigitte ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 17 Jun 2000 11:01:39 -0400 From: Richard Boyd Subject: [sheryl-crew] O.K. So Here I Am Greetings Sheryl Crew, I have listed before but never officially introduced myself . My name is Richard Boyd and I'm an advertising photographer in South West Virginia, U.S.A . I'm 45 years old, and I've been a Sheryl Crow fan since about 1994 , when Hollins University gave me a copy of Tuesday Night Music Club to photograph for their Alumni magazine. It seems a graduate student had written some of the lyrics to "All I Want To Do". The story goes that during the recording sessions someone found a book of poetry in a nearby bookstore, showed it to Sheryl Crow and she incorporated some of lyrics into the song. In the spring of 96 Sheryl performed at Radford University in a small basketball arena. It was snowing that night and we get stuck on a traffic jam on Interstate 81 but managed to make it to the show 15 minutes before the start. I was amazed when my friends and I strolled into the arena and found it less than half full. The Wallflowers led off the concert and were quite impressive. But I was there to see Sheryl. So there I stood on a basketball court 30 ft. from the microphone as she walked out on to the stage and played "If It Makes You Happy". It couldn't have been a more personal experience unless she had performed in my studio! After that concert I realized I was a fan. When the Globe's Sessions came out I was greatly impressed with the depth of her music and song writing. In the spring of 1999 Sheryl again performed in the area at Virginia Tech. This show was in an auditorium style theatre and was packed. Semisonic led off this show and halfway through the audience was really responding. Then Sheryl and her band arrived. This show was within a few weeks of the DVD performance in Detroit and as you can see on that recording her band was extremely tight and powerful. Sheryl's stage presence was dramatically improved over my first concert experience with her. She talked to the audience and was much more relaxed and obviously enjoying herself. The showstopper was the final encore . Sheryl's piano version of "Home" was an unforgettable experience. The lyric "I'd like to see the sun come up in a stranger's arms" always gives me goosebumps. And I guess that's my favorite part of Sheryl songs. Those little nuggets such as "We got loud guitars and big suspicions great big guns and small ambitions and we still argue over who is God". Which brings me to my favorite Sheryl Crow song which is the acoustic version of "Hard To Make a Stand". Finally last August I saw "Lilith Fair" in Denver . I'm now the proud owner of Dixie Chicks and Sarah McLaughlin CDs. But I have to admit that 50 minutes of Sheryl Crow was not enough. A fan-tasy? To shoot the Album photos for Sheryl's next album. (Hey Sheryl- if you read this stuff, I do a lot of Bluegrass album covers for Doobie Shea, Rebel Records and Copper Creek Records, as well as one for Sony, so don't laugh!) A Crew topic! In this country VH-1 cable channel promotes a concert each year called Divas live . Celine Dion , Aretha Franklin , Mariah Carey are several artists that have appeared. If Sheryl is asked to perform, would this hurt her career? (I feel that she should avoid the diva label since she is a songwriter of great depth and not a pop star like Mariah Carey.) Keep rocking Crew! I have seven guitars. Well, you probably want to know how may years. I have been playing 4-5 years. I started playing half because Sheryl and half because of Raffi. I'll tell you now the best acoustic one I have is my 1937 gibson, but the one I play most is my alvarez RD20C. It is acoustic-electric and it sounds great plugged in and not plugged in. I actually play it more often not plugged in. I only paid 279 dollars for it without the case. I honestly think that I got a great guitar for cheap. If ya really want to go high price wise. Buy a Sheryl Crow Signature guitar from Gibson. That the only guitar I have wanted since it came out. But since I'm not rich and I don't get allowance I'll probably never get it.
