Ok.. speaking in American Dollars (sorry to the canadiens! ;) Most of that is profit... why? 1) Record Labels own recording studios, and unless the Artist Specifically wants another studio, they use them. And thus the 150/hour for six months of recording is really going right back into their own pockets. 2) Large labels like Sony own their own CD production plants so they can make CD for around 45 cents a piece. I dont even wana think about the discount they get on Jewel Cases. (Our label pays 10cents.) 3) Furthermore, radio stations play what is hot to attract listeners. They make their money through advertising. (And I know from experience here.) No amount of money can make the radio station play your music. Those little promo stops are relatively cheap considering the playtime that they are rewarded with. Nothing you can possible dream up will make what the Big Labels do OK. One user wrote into my label's zine saying, "This is about Record Label greed. Why do artists get only 8% of what their album sells? Where does the rest of that go? I'll tell you. Into Mr. VP's trips to SoCal to get laid by $800 a night hookers." I know its kinda vulgar, but that fact that this ammount of money is being made is abusive! What is this gasoline? And another thing you really have to consider is that all of the expenses (that you mentioned, recording studio, touring) come out of the artist's cut, so you that $8 (or whatever) is pretty much profit. And then you really havent considered that big labels dont just own one artist. They cap off at serveral hundred. How much money is that? I'm sorry, I dont wana think about it. It makes me sick. - -Jonathan - ----- Original Message ----- From: "Sean L" To: "mailing list" Sent: Tuesday, May 30, 2000 12:05 AM Subject: Re: [sheryl-crew] A lesson in royalties...I'll try. > ----- Original Message ----- > From: Christina Clark > > > As we see above, the > > artist and songwriting royalites may at MOST take up about $3 (depending > on > > the contract) of each album. > > An artist would be getting paid more BUT, the record label (if a major) > > takes the cost of packaging out of their royalties...so how much is a > record > > label making off a cd shipped to a retailer for a wholesale price of about > > $14?
