Well, I would appreciate if you guys could answer this poll for me: http://www.geocities.com/Vienna/Strasse/2710/questiona.html The results will be placed on the cd. Thanks a lot, David Ribeiro Sheryl Crow Paradise http://listen.to/SherylCrow ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 27 May 2000 13:55:57 -0500 From: "Larry Blumenthal" Subject: [sheryl-crew] Sheryl's photo in Washington Post Yesterday's Washington Post had a great photo of Sheryl at the Congress. She's sitting, I think, waiting to testify or just after she testified. She looks really good too - the photo is in black and white. I think it's exclusive to the Post because the credit of the photo lists a Washington Post photographer, instead of an API or UPI person. Anyway, because you are all so nice, I will mail this photo to the FIRST person to email me back FREE OF CHARGE. (It will only cost me $0.55 max to do so anyway). I'm doing this because I don't collect Sheryl Crow stuff except for her music (and the occasional bumper sticker, guitar pick, and poster). But I know if I DID collect memorabilia I would love to have this photo. Please note that if you email me and you DON'T hear back, it means someone already claimed the photo. I don't have time to respond to EVERY email. Thanks. Actually I collect memorabilia for Prince and I know that it gets out of hand - I have a whole binder of stuff and now everytime I see something in the paper I have to cut it out and put it in the book. What a pain. I don't even get enjoyment out of it anymore because I'm not as big a Prince fan as I used to be. So this gesture of mine is also an effort to PREVENT me from starting a Sheryl Crow scrapbook :) - -Larr _____________________________________________ NetZero - Defenders of the Free World Click here for FREE Internet Access and Email http://www.netzero.net/download/index.html ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 27 May 2000 15:45:31 EDT From: XMystery79@aol.com Subject: Re: [sheryl-crew] Sheryl Says "Napster is an evil, evil, evil place to go" In a message dated 5/27/00 2:47:57 AM Eastern Daylight Time, darren@bendcable.com writes: > n regards to paying for the recording of her own album.... that's > great!! The article said she doesn't get paid from her sales until every dollar she used to make the album was deducted. I don't think that means she owns it, they still can tell her what to release and what they don't want on there..Like how they put Sweet Child O'mine on a different pressing of the album, and how they took a song of Mya's off of her newest cd without telling her. - ---------------------------------------------------- Sheryl Crow : If It Makes You Happy Join Care2.com's Race for the Rain Forest! ((That would be just about all the large record label!) I'm co-founder of a local record label here in Miami and we would never do anything like take tracks off a CD without telling the artist! This is big mean corporate America doing this. And quite honestly I abhor it. Look for artists to move to more reasonable labels as record label domination becomes more prominent. Also, once CDs lose their edge as Label's and Artists' primary ways of making money censorship and "royalties" will lose their edges as well! Long live those who fight corruption! (like me!) And Sheryl, please rethink yor Napster comments! - -Jonathan - ----- Original Message ----- From: To: Sent: Saturday, May 27, 2000 7:45 PM Subject: Re: [sheryl-crew] Sheryl Says "Napster is an evil, evil, evil place to go" > In a message dated 5/27/00 2:47:57 AM Eastern Daylight Time, > darren@bendcable.com writes: > > > n regards to paying for the recording of her own album.... that's > > great!! Let me make this easy, cause it helps if you have a total understanding of what goes on in the industry.... I will use Sheryl's TNMC example. In an interview she said that it cost $230,000 to make, let's say in performance royalties she was making $1 per album. The $230,000 is an advance from the record company , in other words, it is to be RECOUPED, paid back. What the record company does is take the artist royalties from the artist until that advance is fully recouped. This means at $1 per album, Sheryl needed to sell 230,000 records before she made any money in artist royalties. So on album 230,001 she would have made $1, on album 230,002 she would have made another dollar and so on. So lets say, Sheryl sold 8 million copies of TNMC in North America (all other territories are foreign and she was probably getting a 3/4 royalty rate, or even less), she would have made $7,770,000 as opposed to $8,000,000 because of the amount that had to be recouped. If you are not lost and would like to learn more, read on. But in reality, she made more than this because she was also a songwriter, probably getting between $0.010 and $0.036 per song (based on $0.072 per song royalty rate), per album (that rate is higher now, because she doesn't have as many collaborators to split songwriting royalites with), so, I worked it out, ranging from songs like I Shall Believe with one other collaborator ($0.036) to songs like Solidify with 6 other collaborators ($0.01028), she ends up making (based on the aformentioned royalty rate of $0.072) $0.14468 per album in songwriting royalties (14.468 cents), if she sold 8mill. records like I suggested, she would have made $1,157,440 in songwriting royalties, and Bill Bottrell would have made practically the same, except he didn't write one song. As someone mentioned in a post, I can't remember who, sorry, they said that cd's don't cost that much considering how much work is put into it, well, I wish that was the case, but unfortunately it is not. As we see above, the artist and songwriting royalites may at MOST take up about $3 (depending on the contract) of each album. An artist would be getting paid more BUT, the record label (if a major) takes the cost of packaging out of their royalties...so how much is a record label making off a cd shipped to a retailer for a wholesale price of about $14? About $10 or $11, how sickening is that????!!! All the work the artist puts into that album.....and they walk away with 1/4 of what the label makes. And after ALL this, the record label owns the masters???? After all that money is given too them??? AAAAAHHHHHHHH!!! Makes me want to scream. I need to get my ass in there and fix it! lol, like that will happen. Hope ya'll learned something in this here lesson. Christina I also hope it made some sense.... >Actually, they pay upfront and she has to pay back.. GO SEE IT! Owen is so funny, my mom loves him now too, after lastnights Letterman and SN, she says his humour is so great, and he seems genuinely likeable. There is a hysterical outtake at the end of him..... There is also a really funny scene with him and some vultures....lol!! I am not going to tell you, it's just funny. I can't imagine Sheryl sitting with him watching this movie at the premier, I would have been peeing my pants sitting next to him watching it, especially that outtake.....lol I really hope it does well, the theatre I went to was pretty full, but I think maybe a lot of people were there because they couldn't get seats for Mission Impossible 2, the lineups were UNBELIEVABLE!!!! CRAZY! I bet I had a better time in Shanghai Noon then those folks in MI2!! Nothing like a good dose of laughter to soothe the soul :o) Christina ------------------------------ End of sheryl-crew-digest V3 #151 *********************************
